New Dances: Edition 2012 brings together four of today's notable choreographers, assigned to create world-premiere commissions for each class in The Juilliard School's Dance Division Choreographers: Camille A. Brown: Freshmen Emery LeCrone: Sophomores Susan Shields: Juniors Jarek Cemerek: Seniors Queens native Camille A. Brown is the artistic director of her own company, and was chosen by Robert Battle of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to choreograph students in their training program last season. Choreographer Emery LeCrone was recently honored by an inaugural New York City Center fellowship for choreographic research. Susan Shields is a principal dancer from the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company and current professor at George Mason University. Up-and-coming Czech choreographer Jarek Cemerek currently teaches at the Palucca Schule in Dresden, Germany, and his work with the BalletBoyz in London last season was praised by The Arts Desk as "a pulsing, driving, compellingly theatrical event, lit with noir-ish style and ferocity" FREE tickets available 11/28

Frank Dain Reprises 'The Magic of Mathis' - Don't Tell Mama

Singer Frank Dain will reprise The Magic of Mathis in December with two performances at Don’t Tell Mama, Dec. 8th and 15th at 6pm. This show was recently nominated for a Broadway World Award in Best Tribute Show category. The Magic of Mathis brings fresh interpretations to such Johnny Mathis signature tunes as “Chances Are,” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” “Wild Is the Wind,” “Misty” and “The Twelfth of Never. ” Contributing creative arrangements is Dain's frequent collaborator, Musical Director Kathleen Landis, a popular pianist who is missed by many people at the Cafe Pierre, where she entertained audiences for years. The Magic of Mathis will also include some more obscure songs, as well, such as “99 Miles from L.A.,” “Yellow Roses on Her Gown,” “I’ll Be Easy to Find” and “Photograph,” all part of Mathis’s remarkable 56-year career. The show, which ran very successfully at Metropolitan Room in September, has been directed by the Multi-award winning director/entertainer, Lennie Watts. One of the most prominent Latin-born performers of the pop era, singer/guitarist Jose Feliciano was born September 10, 1945, in Lares, Puerto Rico; the victim of congenital glaucoma, he was left permanently blind at birth. Five years later, he and his family moved to New York City's Spanish Harlem area; there Feliciano began learning the accordion, later taking up the guitar and making his first public appearance at the Bronx's El Teatro Puerto Rico at the age of nine. Jose has recorded nearly 70 albums in his impressive career he is still humble with all the successes he has had and, remarkably, feels that he has just started to share his talents with the world.

Alex Kelly is the former lead singer of Amungus, an electro-pop band produced by Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls. In the spring of 2010 Alex moved back to her hometown in New York City, where she met guitarist and Pillow Theory frontman, Kelsey Warren. Together with DJ Lopro, the great migration has lead to a rather interesting fusion of Rock/Electro,/Dance awesomeness, and scored the band some pretty amazing gigs at local NYC hot spots, such as Webster Hall and the Bowery Electric. The group has recently put out a music video for the song "Funky Hydrophonnic" off of AK's EP entitled "Sticky Butterfly", produced by MTV's Bruce Bohman. In the coming year, Alex Kelly will release a new album, and welcome the addition of a drummer to the bands live show. Check her out!

Traveling the miles along a star-kissed path, the first break came early for D.C.'s ska darlings, when they landed a 1992 tour opening for ska originals, Bad Manners. In 1997, Rancid's Tim Armstrong signed them to Hellcat/Epitaph where they recorded two albums with producer Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion): the genre-defining Willis (SPIN Magazine called it "An equal opportunity dancehall crasher — part '60s keg rock, part 2Tone and part Motown") and Awesome Mix Tape #6 (CMJ noted it for "lacing a Stax shout-out feel with Caribbean rhythms").
