Dr. Jimmy Cliff, Trevor Hall, & Victor Deme - Central Park Mainstage
July 11, 2010 -

The king of Jamaican reggae plays alongside roots newcomers from South Carolina and Burkina Faso. Dr. Jimmy Cliff is the world's the best-known living Jamaican reggae musician and songwriter. He is generally credited for helping popularize the genre internationally with his soundtrack to the movie The Harder They Come, in which he also starred. His many hits include "Sitting In Limbo," "You Can Get It If You Really Want" and "Many Rivers to Cross" and the now classic covers of "Wild World" and "I Can See Clearly Now." He was recently inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and holds The Order of Merit, the highest honor granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts.

Trevor Hall, a native of South Carolina, has been writing and performing since he was fourteen years old. His unconventional mix of acoustic rock and reggae serves as a vibrant backdrop for thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics, which he delivers in a uniquely soulful voice. Of his self-titled 2009 album, Rolling Stone says, “Trevor Hall fills his third album with spiritually inclined roots jams.”

For more than thirty years, Victor Démé has performed his soulful blend of rootsy African blues in bars and clubs of his home town of Ouagadougou, the capital of the landlocked West African nation of Burkina Faso. His heartful vocals evoke the struggle of a hard lived life, but also the confidence and wisdom of a man who comes from the griot tradition and spends his life honing his craft. Having already won acclaim throughout Europe, this is his US debut. But it wasn’t until the intervention of a French journalist and local hip-hop club promoter that he was able to record his first album of all original material. In 2009, his self-titled debut of rootsy blues gems was finally released internationally.

Barrington Levy - Jamaica's #1 Singer of All Time! - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 14, 2010 -

Doors 6pm, Show 8pm. $25 adv, $30 door. Jamaica's #1 singer of all time, Barrington Levy is a driving force in reggae music and remains the perennial favourite of audiences in Jamaica - and throughout the world. Always a solid voice and a uniquely expressive song style, Barrington is consistently at the forefront of the music scene, and has become the most requested vocalist in reggae music history. In the late 1980's, Barrington Levy began working with veteran producer Jah Screw, and together they created some of reggae's most memorable recordings... There was the classic album of Barrington's greatest hits dubbed Broader Than Broadway, which is one of the best reggae collections ever created. This was released on the pioneering hip-hop label Profile, which helped Barrington to become more recognizable in the crossover market. After a stunning performance on the 1994 Sunsplash, Barrington was signed to MCA Records, but quickly parted ways with the label and began working with Jah Screw to make the Duets album, where Levy teamed with all the hottest DJs from Beenie Man to Lady Saw. He came back larger than life with Bounty Killer on the song "Living Dangerously" - undisputedly the biggest reggae song of 1996, both in Jamaica and the United States, and for months held the 1 spot on the dancehall charts worldwide. Barrington was lifted to the top of the charts, his career in full swing again, and continues to remain at the top of playlists on every radio station in Jamaica, and dancehalls throughout the world.

The Small Ponds, feat. Caitlin Cary & Matt Douglas, with Chris Mills and The Age of Gray - Caffe Vivaldi
July 15, 2010 -

The Small Ponds, a collaboration between Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown, Tres Chicas) and Matt Douglas (The Proclivities) played their first show nearly one year ago. They're now in the perfect position to strike out on the road, having won the collective heart of their hometown, Raleigh, N.C. (in '10, they were invited to play the grand opening of the new downtown amphitheatre, and to headline two of the city's hippest arts events -- all within the month of June!), and hovering on the verge of a national release of their debut EP in September.Fans of Caitlin Cary will find her once again reinvented, and playing a starring role alongside Matt Douglas, as they forge a completely new duet paradigm. Douglas, an accomplished jazz woodwind player and a Fulbright scholar focused on the intersection of traditional Eastern European folk and modernism, takes up the guitar and joins with Cary, a seminal voice in the alt.country/Americana tradition, to bring forth a fetching, forthright, and endearing new sound. This is a man and a woman singing together, writing together -- trusting each other's ideas and mostly each other's voices -- rendering a complicated, double-sided musical mirror through which lots of boys and lots of girls might gaze and find something a wee bit pretty, a wee bit scary, and a wee bit true about themselves. The Small Ponds E.P. is now available in limited edition and will be released in the U.S. on Last Chance Records in September. The band will tour in support of the release throughout the summer and fall.

Obsidian Thursdays - Haven
July 15, 2010 -

Aqua Booty Returns to Haven. Properly Stirred and Obsidian Thursdays Present Eric Kupper - Jeannie Hopper – Greg Cuoco. New York City's premier mid-week club night is back once again in conjunction with Aqua-Booty. After the success of the first Obsidian Thursdays - Aqua Booty venture, the second collaboration will commence on Thursday, 15th July, 2010. Properly Stirred, the events and hosting company behind the Obsidian Thursdays concept launched the weekday club night back in June, with the first outing playing host to dance music legend Tony Humphries. This time around the DJ lineup is equally as impressive with DJs Jeannie Hopper, Eric Kupper and Aqua Booty resident Greg Cuoco in attendance. Properly Stirred is on a mission to host not just the biggest names in dance music, but to entertain the Obsidian crowd with innovators and big personalities. The first DJ on the bill is exactly that. Described by Muzik Magazine as, "The DJ who is devoted to exposing soul infused grooves of all persuasions," Jeannie Hopper fits the Obsidian trendsetting concept to a tee. Her Saturday night 'Liquid Sound Lounge' show on WBAI 99.5 FM is the longest running prime time radio show in New York City (Est. 1993), and Jeannie is famed for her mixture of soulful based electronic and live music. A well respected DJ unafraid to play against popular music trends, Jennie Hopper remains a sought after personality throughout the New York Club scene. Alongside Jeannie Hopper will be the multi-talented Eric Kupper. Eric is an all round musician. A talented DJ, producer and instrumentalist, he started his career in the 80s as a keyboardist, guitarist and songwriter. In his early years he worked with the likes of David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Arthur Baker, Mark Kamins, Justin Strauss, Peter Rauhofer and Richie Jones. Eric's escalation through the music industry was a fast one, and in addition to being one of the first 5 Hed Kandi DJs, Eric has remixed some of the biggest names in music, including Garbage, Usher, Alicia Keys, Afrika Bambataa, Whitney Houston, Marianne Faithful, Goldfrap, New Order, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Robert Palmer and more. Having played on, remixed and/or produced over 1700 records, Eric Kupper is widely considered as one of the founders of modern day house music. Aqua Booty founder Greg Cuoco wraps up the roster for this special event. Greg's Aqua Booty night has been in effect for 17 years, coincidently kicking off in the same year as Jeannie Hopper's WBAI radio show. Aqua Booty was born out of one room at a night called 'House Nation' back in the 90s, since then the New York weekly has been providing clubbers with a policy of strictly good times and seriously good music. Aqua Booty and Obsidian Thursdays passion for funky, soul-fueled music makes this collaboration an essential attendance for New Yorkers seeking a momentary escape from the working week. Obsidian Thursdays provide awesome music and delicious food for sexy and sophisticated people every Thursday night at a venue in New York City. Bell Biv Devoe - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 16, 2010 -

Doors 6pm, Show 8pm. $31 adv, $35 door. * All BBD ticketholders are invited to stay for the 10:30PM after-party show with the classic '80s R&B/funk tribute band SOUL CITY KINGS. Bell Biv DeVoe was hatched in the minds of its members, New Edition's Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, upon the departure of lead singer Bobby Brown in 1986. But it wasn't until after New Edition completed its supporting tour for the album Heart Break in 1988 that the trio gave in to the urgings of Heart Break producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and decided to chart its own course. Bell Biv DeVoe enlisted a variety of producers for its debut album, including Jam and Lewis and Public Enemy producers Hank and Keith Shocklee. The results were quite unlike anything in New Edition's repertoire: The beats were funkier, the lyrics and vocals were sexier, and the overall sound had a harder, hip-hop-tinged edge. The album's title track, "Poison," became a number three smash, and it was followed by the equally successful "Do Me!" and the R&B hits "B.B.D. (I Thought it Was Me)," "When Will I See You Smile Again?," and "Dope!" The album itself went on to sell over three million copies and was followed by a remix album the next year. Meanwhile, Bivins took some time off to assemble the so-called East Coast Family, discovering and producing debut albums for Another Bad Creation and Boyz II Men. Hootie Mack, Bell Biv DeVoe's second proper album, was released in 1993 but didn't make as much of an impact. In 1996, all three members of Bell Biv DeVoe participated in a reunion of New Edition.

A New York Evening of Arab Music - Alwan for the Arts

From Al Andalus of the middle ages to the Maghreb, across North Africa and the Near East to distant Mesopotamia, many genres of Arab music evolved over the centuries -- as different as the countries and peoples themselves, yet united by language and heritage. In deference to New York City as a grand cultural mosaic, and in celebration of Arab-American Heritage Week, tonight's concert brings our audiences the diversity of Arab music through the performance of a cross-section of beloved works -- music known to Arab audiences as "tarab" -- performed by many of this City's most esteemed Arab music specialists, including: George Ziadeh and Amir ElSaffar, vocals, oud and santoor; Sami Abu Shumays, Arab violin and members of the Zikrayat Ensemble - Sami Abu Shumays, Director.

William Fitzsimmons with Rosi Golan - Highline Ballroom
July 16, 2010 -

Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 8:00pm. $20. William Fitzsimmons is one of the oddest people you will ever meet. Born the youngest child of two blind parents, William was raised in the outskirts of the steel city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Due to the family's inability to communicate through normal visual means, William's childhood home was filled with a myriad of sounds to replace what eyes could not see. The house was suffused with pianos, guitars, trombones, talking birds, classical records, family sing-a-longs, bedtime stories, and the bellowing of a pipe organ, which his father built into the house with his own hands. When his father's orchestral records were not resonating through the walls, his mother would educate him on the folk stylings of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Simon & Garfunkel. By the completion of his youth and schooling, Fitzsimmons had become well-versed at a variety of instruments, at the minor expense of social standing, interactional skills, and a knowledge of proper shaving technique. William draws from those early folks stylings of his mother's music, and the embellished instrumentation of his father's. He is often compared to contemporaries Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, and the late Elliott Smith, not only for his unique style and skill in writing and proclivity to deal with substantive and evocative subject matter, but also for his use of organic and colorful melodies and arrangements.
