TODD RUNDGREN - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 06, 2011 - New York

The title of Todd Rundgren's 1973 solo album, "A Wizard, A True Star" aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and, most recently, interactive artist (re-designated TR-i), Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential ..60's cult group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972's seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him 'Rock's New Wunderkind'. It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and the above mentioned A Wizard, A True Star, as well as such hit singles as I Saw The Light, Hello It's Me, Can We Still Be Friends, and Bang The Drum. In 1974, Todd formed Utopia, an entirely new approach to the concept of interactive musicianship, and embarked on an extensive round of touring and recording. Standout Utopia offerings included Oops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion. Along the way, Utopia combined technical virtuosity and creative passion to create music that, for millions, defined the term "progressive rock." Rundgren's myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall And Oates. Rounding out his reputation as rock's Renaissance Man, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp's 1989 Off-Broadway production of Joe Orton's Up Against It (the screenplay commisioned by The Beatles for what was meant to have been their third motion picture). He also has composed the music for a number of television series, including Pee Wee's Playhouse and Crime Story. Rundgren recently performed his iconic 1973 album A Wizard A True Star in concert in its entireity for the first time ever. His latest studio album Todd Rundgren's Johnson, a collection of classic Robert Johnson songs, is being released this summer.

Eddie Trunk/Q104.3-FM presents... KIX - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 08, 2011 - New York

The band was founded in 1978 in Hagerstown, Maryland as The Shooze, then changed its name to The Generators before eventually settling on Kix. They were considered one of Maryland's top cover bands prior to their signing with Atlantic Records in 1981. Though considered by many glam metal, the bands pop-metal stylings drew inspiration from bubblegum pop and new wave as well as hard rock.

In 1981, they debuted with a self-titled album "Kix," featuring "Atomic Bombs," "Heartache," "Contrary Mary","The Itch," "The Kid." "Love at First Sight" instantly became a concert favorite. "KIX Are for Kids" creatively merged the name of the band with two popular cereals of the 1960s and 1970s, KIX (that featured an atomic bomb commercial) and the Trix Rabbit (i.e., "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!"). "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" became the band's most popular concert song, always with a unique ad-lib performance by Whiteman. With this album, the tongue-in-cheek rock & roll style of Kix was established.

Their 1983 follow-up, "Cool Kids" showcased a slightly more commercial side of the band featuring the title song and the single "Body Talk." Somewhat overlooked but a favorite with female fans was the ballad "For Shame."

Kix then partnered up with Ratt and future Warrant producer Beau Hill and, in 1985, released the album "Midnite Dynamite," featuring a hard rock single by the same name and funk rock songs "Cold Shower" and "Sex." The band headed west to begin to make a name for themselves in such places as the Sunset Strip, where Motley Crue and other glam metal bands rose to stardom.

Kix went back to the studio to write more songs. In 1988, they released "Blow My Fuse," and finally achieved fame as it went platinum. The slow ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes" -- containing anti-suicide lyrics -- led the way and other popular cuts followed. The album featured popular singles "Cold Blood" and "Blow My Fuse" with popular videos showing the band in concert at Hammerjacks. In 1989, the band released "Kix, Blow My Fuse, the Videos" with their now popular videos and behind-the-scenes footage. As Kix finally graduated to arenas, they opened for such popular artists as Aerosmith.

The album "Hot Wire" finally arrived in 1991 with the single, "Girl Money".. While on tour in 1992, they made a live album, titled "Kix Live" at the University of Maryland, College Park. This album was released in 1993. In 1995, the band released their final album "Show Business," on CMC records. Kix broke up in 1995, and Hammerjack's Concert Hall was torn down in June 1996 to make way for a parking lot for the Baltimore Ravens' stadium.

Steve Whiteman would re-emerge as the singer for local Baltimore band Funny Money, with whom he continues to work. Jimmy Chalfant has also joined Funny Money as the full time drummer. Steve also teaches voice at The Musician's Institute in Baltimore and Triple R Guitar in Lemoyne, Pa. Ronnie Younkins moved to L.A. and wrote, recorded and released the album The Slimmer Twins - Lack of Luxury as a collaboration with singer Jeremy L. White in 2000. In 2002 he founded The Blues Vultures, maturing into the lead singer and main songwriter position and followed in 2005 with the album The Blues Vultures - Cheap Guitars & Honky Tonk Bars. Brian Forsythe plays in The Snakehandlers and has recently been on tour as the guitar player of Rhino Bucket. Brian can be heard on the Bucket's 2005 release 'And Then It Got Ugly'.

Steve Whiteman, Jimmy Chalfant, Ronnie Younkins, and Brian Forsythe have teamed up a few times a year for the last few years to do Kix reunion shows in the Maryland/Pennsylvannia area that have been very well received.

Then in the summer of 2008 Kix performed outside their home area for the first time in 13 years at two of the biggest rock festivals in the US. Rocklahoma in Pryor, Oklahoma and Rock the Bayou in Houston, TX. Kix was hailed by many music websites and attendees as "Best Performance" at both festivals. These were both massive rock festival where Kix played along side acts such as Sammy Hagar, Alice Cooper, Telsa, Queesryche, Ratt, Lita Ford, Warrant and more.

Since then Kix has been performing more and more shows outside their home area as well as more sold out shows around their home base area.

NO TE VA GUSTAR - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
July 08, 2011 - New York

Although South American rock/reggae group No Te Va Gustar (NTVG) started as a humble rock trio, over the years they would balloon into a popular right piece ska/reggae sensation. Originally formed in 1994 as a high school guitar/bass/drums trio, NTVG found that adding percussionists and horn players allowed them to explore genres like candombe, reggae, salsa and ska. By 98' the group could be seen before larger audiences at important Montevideo music festivals. Their debut disc Slo de Noche was independently released in 1999. Thanks to regional touring and word-of-mouth popularity, the record sold better than 5,000 units, a large success for the fledgling group. NTVG won fans the old fashioned way, touring Uruguay and Argentina tirelessly in 2000 and 2001. The band earned major label backing for their sophomore effort Este Fuerte Viento que Sopla, released in 2002. The album earned gold status in less than six months. NTVG found themselves before festival audiences numbering in the ten's of thousands, including the Festival Pilsen (2003) and the Fiesta Final (2003). The band's third original release, entitled Auque Cueste Ver el Sol, did not emerge until 2005. The record's popularity brought NTVG overseas for the first time on a 40-city European tour. Upon returning to South America NTVG appeared before an adoring audience in Buenos Aires, having sold out El Teatro for two consecutive engagements. A live-in-concert DVD was born of NTVG's 2006 world tour, opening doors to perform at some of South America's most important festivals including Pilsen Rock Uruguay, El Pepsi Music (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Pilsen Rock Paraguay. The band's fourth record Todos es Tan Inflamable was released in 2007, enjoying immediate and lasting chart success.

A Magic Flute: Peter Brook - Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College
Through July 17, 2011 -

Almost 30 years after his La Tragédie de Carmen riveted audiences at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, director Peter Brook returns to Lincoln Center with a vivacious new interpretation of Die Zauberflöte. This intimate adaptation strips the work's usual ornamentation to reveal the impish, effervescent heart of Mozart's masterpiece. The gorgeously simple staging features just a single piano and seven highly talented young singers who, under Brook’s subtle directing, fill Mozart’s score with new humanity and color. First delicate and tender, then quirky and playful, the opera unfolds before your eyes with an immediacy and freshness that have been seen only too rarely before. A Magic Flute is Peter Brook’s final creation as the artistic director of Paris’s Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, where in 1974 he founded C.I.C.T., his perennially innovative theatrical production company. Brook was an early and influential member of the Royal Shakespeare Company whose minimalist aesthetic long ago redefined the rules of theater, opera, and film.
