King Sunny Ade - Highline Ballroom
May 18, 2010 -

Since the evolution of juju music in Nigeria in the thirties no exponent has made a more lasting impact in the genre than King Sunny Ade. As a singer, composer and guitarist, he has succeeded over the years in taking this Nigerian social music type to international heights. Ade came on the scene in 1966, but when Ade signed on with Island Records in 1982 as a result of attracting international attention, he was perhaps the biggest natural phenomenon on the Nigerian music scene where massive record sales kept him at the top of the charts. With the release of the album "Juju Music", Ade was launched personally onto the Western pop scene, and his presence generated the kind of buzz associated with a big star. He was presented as a Yoruba prince and referred to as king. His musicians called him chairman. Elegant, youthful-looking and courteous, Sunny Ade had the charisma to match his new status. He even had the air of regal candor to go with his title, "the king of juju music." Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 8:00pm. $25 adv, $30 at door.

May 20, 2010 -

Doors 6pm, Show 8pm. $25 adv, $30 door. VIP Booth for 4: $180 // VIP Booth for 6: $270. At a young age, SHEMEKIA COPELAND is already a force to be reckoned with in the blues. While still in her 20s, she's opened for the Rolling Stones, headlined at the Chicago Blues Festival and numerous festivals around the world, scored critics choice awards on both sides of the Atlantic (The New York Times and The Times of London) and shared the stage with such luminaries as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Taj Mahal and John Mayer. Heir to the rich tradition of soul-drenched divas like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor, Copeland's shot at the eventual title of Queen of the Blues is pretty clear. By some standards, she may already be there. Legendary slide-guitarist SONNY LANDRETH has been working steadily for decades, amassing a devoted following among his fans and peers. Eric Clapton said he is "probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced." Indeed, as Landreth's way of playing is unmistakably his own - his method combines the bottleneck slide, palm and finger-picking techniques that produce a sound that is often said to resemble many instruments playing at once.

Birthday celebrations and concomitant themes of longevity are pervasive in Chinese art of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Longevity is also encoded in peaches, cranes, immortals, and flora and fauna of many kinds, sometimes forming sophisticated visual word play expressing wishes of long life for the honoree. The exhibition will draw together works in many media from the Museum's collection to illuminate these auspicious themes.
