CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF MANHATTAN PRESENTS MONTH OF ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE-THEMED PROGRAMMING THROUGHOUT MAY
Interactive Activities Explore AAPI Culture through Food, Art, Names, Puppetry, and Storytelling
ART & DESIGN Many traditions came to be through the shared experiences of designing and creating together as a family. Kids will learn about and try different crafts and artforms from China and Tibet to create their own original works. • China: Egg-straordinary Wooden Egg Painting Egg painting in China holds a rich history and are often gifted during festivals to symbolize luck, prosperity, and new beginnings. Inspired by traditional egg painting techniques, children will paint their own wooden eggs. Tuesday – Thursday, May 7 – 9 | 10:30 am – 4:30 pm | All ages
• Tibet: Tsepdro Lucky Symbol Sculpting During Losar, the Tibetan New Year, traditional sculptures called tsepdro are made using yak butter. Using clay, kids will be able to create their own sculptures to welcome the new year. Tuesday – Thursday, May 7 – 9 | 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm | All ages
YOUR NAME IS A STORY Kids will learn about the importance behind names, which are often rooted in different social and cultural heritages, and find inspiration in the children’s book The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi. • Blossom Tree Name Installation Creativity will blossom as children create pink and white blooms adorned with their own names. • That’s My Name: Name Plates Inspired by the book Alma and How She Got Her Name, a story for those who may be curious about the origins of their names, kids will make personalized nameplates out of bendable wax. • Interactive Storytime and Meditation: I am a Lotus with Guest Author Anu Seghal. A lyrical story time, led by Anu Seghal, an author, educator and the founder of The Culture Tree, a cultural literacy and language education company that focuses on South Asia, will explore the lotus flower and importance behind mindfulness. PUPPETRY Across many cultures, puppetry and performance have been used to pass down narratives from one generation to the next. Children will learn about different forms of puppetry from Indonesia, India, and China and create their own puppets. • Indonesia: Wayang Shadow Puppets Lids will design and construct their own Indonesian Wayang Kulit puppets and learn about the oldest form of freestanding puppetry. • India: Kathputli String Puppets Using wood and fabric, children will create their own string puppets inspired by Kathputli puppets from Rajasthan, India. Tuesday – Sunday, May 21 – 26 | 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm | All ages
• China: Dancing Dragon Puppets The Dragon Dance is a festive performance often seen during the Chinese New Year. Kids will make their own miniature dancing dragon puppets modeled after the giant ones used in the Lunar New Year celebration.
