Second Helping: Two Dead Lovers, Dead Funny
Hilarious queer tragicomedy about death, grief, nuns behaving badly, exploding knee replacements and the limitations of bootstraps.
Accidental enemy of Mother Teresa. Two time widow before age 40. Victim of an exploding knee replacement. Nonbinary comedian Kelli Dunham (the former Sister Mercy) is learning the limits of DIY-A (Do It Yourself Alone) approach to life just how you'd expect from an ex-nun: the hard way. Part stand-up comedy, part sit-down tragedy with love and body fluids in the cracks in between. With special guest Beth Toner. Kelli spent all of August performing Second Helping in the basement of a gay bar at the Edinburgh Fringe and was featured on BBC-4, BBC Scotland, the Sunday Times and in an online forum on death with dignity hosted by a member of Scottish Parliment. Kelli Dunham is the nonbinary nurse ex-nun polyamorous storytelling comedian so common in modern Brooklyn. Kelli has appeared on Showtime and the Discovery Channel, PBS Stories From the Stage, the Moth Mainstage, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, the Cinderblock Comedy Festival, the Women in Comedy Festival, and nationwide at colleges, prides, fundraisers and even the occasional livestock auction. Kelli's writing has been featured on Autostraddle, XOJane, HuffPost Personal, The New Republic, Time, Thought Catalog, Lady Science and NPR and Kelli is the author of seven hilarious nonfiction books. Kelli's substack Second Helping Gazette features very hilarious writing about very serious topics. Former NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio once called Kelli a "show off" to her face. With special guest Beth Toner...Beth Toner is a nurse, writer, erstwhile theatre major, and nerd who still hasn’t figured out what she wants to be when she grows up. When she’s not working her day job or volunteering at the local free clinic, you can find her trying to decide which crochet project to start (and not finish) next or trekking doggedly up and down hills in a trail race while the younger, faster folks greet her with “good job!” and “on your left!” She’s currently writing Disaster Girl, her one-woman show, which is kind of about her obsession with the Titanic and tornadoes but also about her family. Happens on the following Dates: Mar 25, 2024, 7:00pm to 8:30pm Timezone: EDT Apr 22, 2024, 7:00pm to 8:30pm Timezone: EDT May 18, 2024, 4:00pm to 5:30pm Timezone: EDT
