Love Letter From Japan: Toru Dodo
Spend a special evening with GRAMMY-nominated pianist Toru Dodo in a rare solo piano setting. He'll also feature vocalist Alicia Olatuja.
TORU DODO was born in Tokyo , and started playing classical piano at age 4. In 1995, after graduating Meiji University in Tokyo, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated summa cum laude in 1998. Following his graduation from Berklee, Dodo moved to NY. Dodo has released five solo albums all produced by legendary guitarist, Yoshiaki Masuo for the Japanese label, Jazz City Spirits and has been seen in performance with Kenny Garrett, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Louis Hayes, Ruth Brown and Terumasa Hino among others. He is often seen as pianist with some of today’s most exciting jazz vocalists, including, Somi, Nicole Henry, Laurin Talese and this evening’s special guest Alicia Olatuja.
Singer Alicia Olatuja earned a master’s degree in classical voice and opera from the Manhattan School of Music, not to pursue a career in opera, but because she realized she “needed to get training about how to do all the things I wanted to do without hurting myself, whether gospel or jazz or R&B or classical. Actually, I like to do one opera a year to keep up with the discipline and skills.”
Showtimes are at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $25 in advance / $30 the day of the show. For more information, visit https://www.nycjazzpianofestival.com/.
