Museum of Sex New York Is Proud to present Utopia: Three Centuries of Sexuality in American Cults and Communes
Museum of Sex New York is proud to present Utopia: Three Centuries of Sexuality in American Cults and Communes, a groundbreaking exhibition curated by filmmaker and curator Jodi Wille, on view October 11, 2025 through April 12, 2026. Spanning two floors, the show is the first of its kind to trace three centuries of sexuality, relationships, and identity within America’s utopian and alternative spiritual movements, examining their influence on mainstream culture. Featuring more than 300 works—including art, photography, films, records, printed matter, clothing, and rare artifacts—Utopia explores over 20 historical intentional communities such as the Shakers, Oneida Community, The Source Family, Church of All Worlds, Cockettes, Kerista Commune, Rajneesh/Osho, Unarius Academy of Science, House of David, Father Divine, and The Farm. Through these archives, Wille highlights how sexuality, spirituality, gender, family, and art were reimagined to create alternative models of intimacy and belonging, leaving a lasting cultural imprint. To deepen the exploration, the exhibition coincides with citywide programming, including Wille’s October 19th talk Cosmic Kinships at NYU’s Occult Humanities Conference and an October 22nd double screening of The Source Family documentary at The Roxy Theater, presented with Sacred Bones and Museum of Sex, followed by a Q&A and book signing with Wille, Isis Aquarian, and Dawn Hurwitz.
