The Metropolitan Black Bar Association will host their 39th Anniversary Awards Gala - “Expanding Our Reach: Prominence. Presence. Professionalism”. The spring Gala will be hosted by the award-winning WNBC anchor David Ushery at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers on Friday, May 19, 2023.

The Association will welcome NYC Elected officials including Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (Bragg was 2022 honoree) and others to attend; the Black-tie evening will celebrate the 2023 stellar legal honorees including:

Trailblazer of the Year: Deborah N. Archer, President, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU); Professor of Clinical Law and Co-Faculty Director of the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU School of Law

Public Servant of the Year: Camille Chin-Kee-Fatt

Jurist of the Year: Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy, Associate Justice, Appellate Division, First Department

Corporate Counsel of the Year: Conway Ekpo, Director & Associate General Counsel, Brex

Private Practitioner of the Year: Nexus U. Sea, Partner, O’Melveny

“At the Metropolitan Black Bar Association’s 39th Anniversary Awards Gala, we will celebrate our work of promoting diversity and inclusion, providing professional development opportunities, and working towards a more just legal system. This year’s Gala theme is “Expanding Our Reach: Prominence. Presence. Professionalism.” Our theme speaks to the opportunity we have to enhance our service to the Bar and community with the collective support of our members and partners. The 2023 Gala will include: cocktail reception, seated dinner, awards presentation, dancing and music by DJ Niara Sterling with live performance by Thurston O’Neal; the 2023 Gala Chair is Nate Saint Victor, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, Engine No. 1.
