Poster House Spring 2025 Capsule Exhibition: Copy/Paste/Print/Repeat: Mike King & the Art of the Gig Poster
Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will present new capsule exhibitions for the spring 2025 season.
Copy/Paste/Print/Repeat: Mike King & the Art of the Gig Poster will open to the public on April 24, 2025 and close on November 2, 2025.
Copy/Paste/Print/Repeat: Mike King & the Art of the Gig Poster, curated by Angelina Lippert, features a collection of posters by Mike King, America’s most prolific gig-poster artist. The posters exhibited are a compilation of common and rare designs from 30 years of his career, from what began as a means of promoting his own bands’ shows in the late 1970s to a full-time specialty in the art of the eye-catching concert poster. Today, there are few major venues or bands that haven’t worked with him; his imagery has saturated American music culture, appearing on album covers, t-shirts, and posters.
The works highlight shifts in the available technology for making posters, from fully analog to digital, and demonstrate how the function of gig posters evolved from advertising to collectible merchandise. Each section focuses on Mike’s process for creating the manual pasteup, screen-print or digital file necessary to produce each poster.
