Rhythm of the Unseen Photography Exhibition
Rhythm of the Unseen is a celebration of photographic expressionism showcasing the work of 11 artists from around the globe. The exhibition will be held at the Soho Photo Gallery from May 2 - 8, 2023.
The exhibition is part of an ongoing collaboration of a group of international artists from the US, Canada, Great Britain, Latvia and Holland. They met in 2020 while participating in an intensive year-long program exploring the intersection of photography, abstraction and creativity taught by British photographers Valda Bailey and Doug Chinnery.
The title of the show — Rhythm Of The Unseen — encapsulates the approach and vision of the exhibiting artists. Like the abstract expressionist painters, their work is diverse and uses unique approaches to create their images, eschewing the camera’s ability to capture reality and replacing it with techniques that result in abstract images. They use a variety of in-camera techniques, such multiple exposure and intentional camera movement (ICM), along with post-processing methods, as a way of abstracting shapes, eliminating detail and challenging reality in their images. They wield their cameras like a paintbrush, value spontaneity and improvisation and approach their work at a different pitch from traditional photographers. The resulting images often turn the accepted notion of what a photograph is on its head.
There will be an Opening Reception on May 4th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, and an Artists’ Talk on May 6th from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. In addition, a series of talks and workshops by the artists are scheduled throughout the exhibition. A special presentation by Stephanie Johnson, founder, creator and publisher of ICM Magazine, entitled “Reimagining the World through ICM” will be held on Saturday, May 6th at 11:00 AM. All events are free but registration is required .
This is the third group show by these artists. Their first was at Sohn Fine Art in Lenox, MA, in September 2022, and was followed by a second show at The Horsebridge Arts Centre in Whitstable, Kent, in November 2022.
