(CLASS) Short-Form Humor Writing with Colin Stokes at Union Hall
Develop strong premises, learn about getting work published, and hone your joke writing with 'The Onion' contributor, Colin Stokes.

This class meets four Sundays, July through August: 7/19, 7/26, 8/2, 8/9, 1:15pm - 3pm. One ticket purchase enrolls you for the length of the session (all four meetings). Class has 15 students max.

Colin Stokes (The New Yorker, The Onion, McSweeney's) will work with students to develop their ideas and improve their comedy writing skills in short-form humor pieces (under ~700 words). Whether you’re writing a humorous personal essay, copy for your company, or a submission to a magazine, Colin will teach you how to develop strong premises, help hone joke writing from line to line, and offer advice on getting work published.

Colin has written dozens of Shouts pieces for The New Yorker while working there as the Associate Cartoon Editor from 2014-2023, and has been a contributor at The Onion for 11 years, writing headlines and timely jokes. In May 2026, he received an MFA from NYU Tisch in screen and TV writing. He is currently the humor editor at Now Voyager magazine.

Supplies: Bring a hardbacked notebook or a clipboard and paper for note taking and writing, as well as a pen or pencil of your choice.

Students will generate work during this course and receive personal feedback as they develop their material.
