From NYC to London via Telectroscope: New York City Guide's Favorite Activity this Week

NEW YORK, NY, May 28th, 2008 - This week New Yorkers and Londoners alike will be treated to one of the most ambitious transatlantic public art engineering projects either city has ever seen. During this week’s celebration of the 125th celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge, visitors to the waterfront site will be amazed to find what appears to be a massive telescope (roughly 11 by 3 meters) bursting from the ground. The same massive installation sits on the banks of the Thames in the shadow of the Tower Bridge in London.

New York visitors stepping up to the life size lens will have a real time, life size view of the UK 24hrs a day, seven days a week until June 15th.  NYC visitors have already started exploring the possibilities with white board messages, the exchange of phone numbers, and setting up times to meet.  There’s even talk of marriage proposals!

Artist and Inventor Paul St. George is the mastermind behind this step linking NYC to London. The project was set in motion by his great grandfather Alexander Stanhope St. George who had great ambitions to connect places on opposite sides of the world visually via a man made tunnel, and he even started digging under the Atlantic. His venture has cut short however, and his great-grandson now hopes to fulfill his great grandfather’s vision.

For now, his visualization is seen in the ‘telectroscope’ and is being made possible through a link into existing fiber-optic networks in NYC and London. However, Paul keeps his grandfather’s spirit alive in the representation of the tunnel using rocks and rubble surrounding the Victorian looking installation to appear as if it dives right into the water and spans across the ocean.
