Quinn XCII Ashe, Christian French - Terminal 5
February 22, 2019 - New York

2017 continues to be a breakout year for the newcomer Detroit singer/songwriter, Quinn XCII. With his ability to seamlessly blur the lines between pop, electronic, hip-hop, and soul music, he has quickly paved his own lane with his unique sound. An early mixtape release turned heads, but it was his debut EP Change of Scenery, released in 2015, that put Quinn XCII on the map, connecting with the blogosphere and snaring millions of online streams. His follow-up EP release, Bloom, cemented his ability to meld styles and write about more varied subject matter. Next it was his featured vocals on "Kings of Summer", a collaboration with longtime friend and producer ayokay (with whom he also exclusively worked with on his first two EPs), that started to bring him to the mainstream. The song became the sleeper summer hit of 2016, reaching #1 on Spotify's Global Viral Charts, #1 on HypeMachine, accumulating over 50 million plays on Spotify, and getting regular spins at Top 40 radio around the country.

You Me at Six - Gramercy Theatre
February 22, 2019 - New York

Few bands get to spring a surprise six albums into their career. Even fewer do so in as dramatic a fashion as You Me At Six do on their simply titled new record, VI. They know what you probably think of them – "The emo pop-rockers from Surrey," as guitarist Chris Miller puts it – and once upon a time you would have been right. But not for a long time, and certainly not on VI, a record that switches moods and styles with breathless confidence, from devastatingly defiant rock to joyously uplifting pop. It all but drips with melodies and moods. It's the kind of record a band makes when they are in love with all the possibilities of music. VI is not what you might expect a You Me At Six album to sound like. "We've always been a band that straddles styles," says singer Josh Franceschi, sitting with his bandmates outside a London bar on a warm, early Summer afternoon. "We've always had that pop sensibility, but we've tried not to pigeonhole ourselves – that's come from other people. If we want to make another six albums, we have to to maintain the foundations of what makes this band good, and we have to be contemporary and forward thinking." "We're five individual blokes," guitarist Ma... (read more)

Popgun Presents Julia Holter - Warsaw
February 22, 2019 - Brooklyn

Julia Holter Aviary is an epic journey through what Julia Holter describes as “the cacophony of the mind in a melting world.” Out on October 26 via Domino, it’s the Los Angeles composer’s most breathtakingly expansive album yet, full of startling turns and dazzling instrumental arrangements. The follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2015 record, Have You in My Wilderness, it takes as its starting point a line from a 2009 short story by writer Etel Adnan: "I found myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds." It’s a scenario that sounds straight out of a horror movie, but it’s also a pretty good metaphor for life in 2018, with its endless onslaught of political scandals, freakish natural disasters, and voices shouting their desires and resentments into the void. “Amidst all the internal and external babble we experience daily, it's hard to find one's foundation,” says Holter. “I think this album is reflecting that feeling of cacophony and how one responds to it as a person—how one behaves, how one looks for love, for solace. Maybe it’s a matter of listening to and gathering the seeming madness, of forming something out of it and envisioning a future.” Fittingly for an alb... (read more)

Sheartscape Landbreak Dreamtigers Kindling Giant Peach - Saint Vitus
February 23, 2019 - Brooklyn

Psychedelic shoegaze indie rockers from Easthampton, having blossomed from their modest indiepop beginnings, KINDLING as a full band embodies equal parts delicate beauty and crushing heaviness, awash in a sea of fuzz, reverb, and volume. "There's nothing soothing about the music of the Massachusetts shoegaze band Kindling. Kindling don't use their waves of guitar effects to beautify their songs; instead, they drag them through mud. There's a lot of fuzz on this band's guitars, and it's always punishing, never uplifting. Still, Kindling bring some seriously pretty melodies and vocal harmonies in with all that ugliness." —STEREOGUM

Noble Kids (Record Release Show) - Mercury Lounge
February 24, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over Noble Kids (Brooklyn, NY) is Bryce Barsten, Michael Steiner & Kevin Chang. Their sophomore record 'Messy Pretty' (due Feb. 2019) is a bold collection of songs that speak loudly and clearly about queerness and identity, through personal experience and interpretation. It represent the messy but honest process in which they created the record, and the dynamic among the bandmates. With sparks of shiny pop, buried beneath indie rock, their sound is driven by an interplay of clever guitar work, unafraid and upfront vocals, dirtied by demo takes and reprocessed sounds. They teamed up with engineer Greg Giorgio (Sharon Van Etten, The National, Tokyo Police Club) (Tarquin Studios) to make the record, and are set to release in February, 2019.
