Scientific Controversies No. 19: Animal Consciousness - Pioneer Works
July 09, 2019 - Brooklyn

What are animals thinking? When in the evolution of animals did attention become thinking become consciousness become self-awareness? Consciousness did not materialize singularly and suddenly with the emergence of human beings. Yet animals are often characterized as reflexive and unthinking. Consider the portrait of power-hungry chimps presumed to be simply aggressive, to pursue dominance above all else in groups shaped by harsh competition, reacting almost mindlessly to instinct. Contrast this caricature with the observations of chimps reconciling after a confrontation. They reach out to each other after seemingly sulking in neighboring trees, meeting in between to hug and kiss. Reconciliation reflects the value placed in their relationships, a desire to mitigate the damage inflicted by conflict. Primates cooperate and console, as do elephants. Some animals demonstrate a sense of fairness, compassion, and empathy. Dolphins admire themselves in mirrors, apparently aware they are looking at their own reflection; that is, they are self-aware. A more balanced appreciation of animal consciousness also forces us to consider the implications for human consciousness and in particular huma... (read more)

Amusing Bouche: Live & in Person - The PIT
July 09, 2019 - New York

"Amusing Bouche" is a successful podcast hosted by Molly Socha where each episode she invites one of her hilarious friends to join her in preparing a meal together. They talk about the best and worst parts of improv/sketch/standup and how they pay the bills until they can actually get paid in comedy. Perhaps the best part of the show may be the ridiculously fun and creative games Molly comes up with to play with her guests and the improvising that happens as they try to avoid giving themselves food poisoning. Some have said, it's the poor woman's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." But instead of the fancy espressos and vintage cars it's groceries from Trader Joes int the smallest kitchen in New York. No, but really, she stores pots and pans in a coat closet. In "Amusing Bouche: Live and In Person," Molly will showcase the same up-and-coming talent from her podcast and also include a "food prep interview" segment where she and her guest will chat and prepare a very transportable, mess-free edible treat for the audience.**

Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits) has announced the debut album for his band Operators, titled Blue Wave, out worldwide April 1st on Last Gang Records. Formed in 2013, the band features Boeckner on vocals, guitar, and synths and is joined by New Bomb Turks and Divine Fits drummer Sam Brown and electro-wiz Devojka. Produced by Graham Walsh (METZ, Alvvays, Viet Cong), much of Blue Wave was recorded in a middle of nowhere 1850s-vintage barn in southern Ontario. Blue Wave follows the release of EP1, an upbeat, aggressively melodic collection of synth driven pop songs featuring the single "True" and gave us a taste of what was to come with the band. After a length of time on the road with the likes of Future Islands, New Pornographers and more, the band's sound evolved from an analog post-punk project to a more live, punked out sound, with Boeckner finding himself often strapped back into his guitar. The first single "Cold Light" demonstrates the beautiful melding of both worlds. The single wil be out January 29th via all digital platforms. Listen to via Pitchfork. Dan Boeckner has shown his diverse musical taste over the years; consequently, his decision to focus h... (read more)

Oliver Beer: Vessel Orchestra Live Performance - Metropolitan Museum of Art
July 12, 2019 - New York

Oliver Beer: Vessel Orchestra is the first sound-based installation commissioned by The Met. Hybrid by design, it is a musical instrument, a series of live performances, and an installation composed of thirty-two sculptures, utilitarian vessels, and decorative objects from the Museum collection. Selected for their natural pitches, which range from low C to high G on the chromatic musical scale, they form an arresting and unexpectedly versatile instrument, similar to an organ with multiple pipes. The Vessel Orchestra has two distinct modes. During Museum hours, a pre-programmed audio interface will play a new composition written by Beer, activating the vessels in real time—"player piano-style." On Friday evenings, the exhibition will feature a diverse group of guest artists who will perform new compositions and improvisations on this radical musical instrument in a series of intimate concerts.

Charly Bliss - The Mercury Lounge
July 12, 2019 - New York

"I don't know why it's easiest for me to frame the darkest lyrics in the context of upbeat songs," says Charly Bliss' Eva Hendricks. "It's completely instinctual and not something I ever plan out. It sort of mirrors how I am, and maybe it's a way of protecting myself. In my opinion, the two best emotional releases are crying and dancing, so it makes sense to me to marry the two." That combination is the core of Charly Bliss who, on this record, embraced both sides of that equation more than ever before. Challenging each other to be exposed, to be seen for who they really are as people, and then to double down on the sound that emerged from that process is the story of the band's evolution from the scrappy upstarts who made 2017's brash punk LP Guppy, to the confident, assured artists behind the comparatively dynamic, unapologetically pop Young Enough. "We definitely go to different places on this one," says bassist Dan Shure. "But it still sounds like us. It's still fun." As they started writing, they tapped into their mutual love of pop music. "You know, bangers? Songs that just stick with you for a really long time," Dan says. In particular, the expansive but gritty title track a... (read more)

Adam Ezra Group at The Loft - City Winery
July 14, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $20 Day of Show It's difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin' essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community. Community is epitomized by a belief that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world. For their most recent release, Hurricane Wind (2017), the AEG fanbase turned the full power of its collective hurricane wind outward, and shared the music for free with over 5000 people over the course of two weeks. Such a groundswell of activity wouldn't have been possible even a few years ago; "Hurricane Wind," to AEG, represents both a celebration and reaffirmation of how remarkably that community has grown. A tireless touring outfit, the Adam Ezra Group (AEG) is constantly on the road, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. They are creating a powerful, inclusive community around AEG shows that is beginning to be compared to a social-movement as much as a traditional ... (read more)

A Look Back: 50 Years After Stonewall unites the work of queer artists living and producing in and around New York City beginning around the time of the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and leading into the 1980s. This is only a portion of the story, an incomplete history, most especially given that the Gay Liberation movement and its coinciding contemporary art market had not placed transgender voices nor people of color at the forefront of the conversation. The exhibition includes both documentation of the Gay Liberation movement and a look back at the work made by LGBTQ+ artists during this time. Central to the work included are the subjects of protest, revolt, celebration, and love. Kate Millett's sculpture, American Flag Goes to Pot (1970) provides a blunt protest to government authority, while Joan E. Biren's photograph's document the tenderness of love between two women. The work made during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, beginning in 1981, becomes entangled in death and remembrance, an epidemic defining this decade most especially in the New York City queer community and resulting in a tremendous amount of loss.
