If you like dancing, get to know the bachata, a dance form from the Dominican Republic. Like its cousins the merengue and salsa, bachata is a fun and simple step (especially when there’s a live band behind you). With a tremendous Dominican population in New York City, there are several places where you can dance bachata, whether you’re a lifelong devotee or learning the steps for the first time. Baila!

Best Bachata Clubs NYC: Williamsburg

Bembe

On a plain-Jane corner in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, you’ll find one of the most happening clubs for bachata, salsa, and reggaeton (Puerto Rican dance music) in the city. Bembe features DJs every night of the week who specialize in one or multiple varieties of world music, with bachata playing during Rhum Saturdays and ESO!! Mondays. Be ready to dance close to your neighbors (space is tight), bring cash for the bar, and move your hips to the music! 81 S. 6th St., bembe.us

Best Bachata Clubs NYC: Union Square

Come to Bachata nights every Friday at Club Cache near Union Square. If you’re there before 9:45, you only have to pay a $7 cover, with free bachata classes included! You’ll find a variety of experience levels in the room and a fun time whether you have two left feet or not. And if you come late (the party will last well past midnight), maybe you can bum a free lesson off one of the more skilled bachata-ists. 35 E. 13th St., 917-684-8584, clubcachenyc.com

Best Bachata Clubs NYC: NoHo

Gonzalez y Gonzalez

Looking for a live band? Gonzalez y Gonzalez has you covered with fantastic live salsa, bachata, and merengue from Tuesday through Sunday every week. The crowd is fun-loving and packed with Latin music lovers. Sundays are Bachata Brunch! That means free lessons, a DJ, and a band, all basking in the glory of this Dominican dance form. Classes start at 3 p.m., with the band playing at 4:00 and 6:00. And if you’re in the mood for tasty tacos, GyG will have you covered there too. 192 Mercer St., 212-473-8787, gygnyc.com

Best Bachata Clubs NYC: Washington Heights

Located in Washington Heights, Club Deportivo is a neighborhood spot if you’re looking for something more local. Come on Friday nights between midnight and 4 a.m. (you read that right) for salsa, mambo, and bachata music selected by a DJ, plus a floor full of dancers looking for a great time. 2088 Amsterdam Ave., 212-923-3817

Best Bachata Clubs NYC: Midtown West

Here’s your midtown selection for bachata: Iguana has you covered from here to Sunday. This restaurant-slash-club offers free classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays and bachata music on the playlist nearly every night of the week. But keep in mind the Latin Club offerings happen on the second floor—if you go to the basement, it’s hip-hop and top 40. 240 W. 54th St., 212-765-5454, iguananyc.com/dancing
