Michelle Shocked is a traveling troubadour whose musical talent is so eclectic it is difficult to categorize.
Michelle Shocked made her debut in Europe in 1986, with "The Texas Campfire Tapes," a bootleg recording made on a Sony Walkman cassette recorder around a festival campfire. In 1987, she signed a contract with (now) Universal, retaining ownership of both masters and publishing. Her studio debut was the 1988 album, "Short Sharp Shocked"; vignettes of growing up in rural East Texas. "Captain Swing," released in 1989, and "Arkansas Traveler," released in 1992, completed her "Mercury Trilogy." In 1995, "Quality of Mercy" was on the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film "Dead Man Walking." A studio version of an underground release, "Kind Hearted Woman" was released in 1996 after winning a valiant fight to retain her intellectual property rights. In 2002, she launched her Mighty Sound label. A 2003 bootleg of a live gospel set was sanctioned for release in 2007 as "ToHeavenURide,", followed by a studio release in 2009, "Soul of My Soul." In 2013, Shocked conceived "Truth Vs Reality," a performance art ‘exploit,’ and her 2019 Cuban rumba-inspired studio effort, “Musical Chairs: A Comparsa for Artist Rights” awaits release. Shocked continues her creative endeavors as an independent artist and currently lives in Manhattan.
