How did America shape national identity in a time of political scandal and economic uncertainty? What stories were told and which were intentionally left out? What was actually going on with the 1976 bicentennial? Why is any of this relevant today?
In 1976, America marked its 200th anniversary of independence. The whole country celebrated with large-scale parades, fireworks, historical reenactments, and heavy nationwide programming โ from a cross-country Freedom Train to tall ships filling New York Harbor like it was a maritime movie set. It was loud, visible, and everywhere. But all of this was happening during complicated moment in history. Itโs post-Vietnam and post-Watergate. Yet in a time of political divide and economic uncertainty, the country came together through massively publicized events and iconic national campaigning. Now America is turning 250. In this talk, public historian Luke Boyd examines how 1976 shaped national identity and what it reveals about present day America.
