New York premiere of “Daylight”
THE NEW YORKER and DOC NYC Selects invite you to the New York premiere of “Daylight,” a short documentary by Jon Kasbe and produced by Zoe Rogovin.
You may not expect to find a Swiftie among men serving life sentences for murder in California state prison, but that is just the first of many surprises in Jon Kasbe’s touching new film, “Daylight.” As Joe Garcia comes up for parole after 21 years, he wrestles with remorse for his crime, and he finds new hope in Taylor Swift’s lyrics. After he publishes an unlikely essay in The New Yorker, he gets a second chance not only at freedom, but also at love. “Daylight” uses the short form to epic emotional effect, reminding its audience that every one of us can experience redemptive changes-of-heart.
The screening will be followed by an on-stage conversation with filmmaker Jon Kasbe, protagonist Joe Garcia, and New Yorker story editor Daniel A. Gross.
