Born in Memphis and educated in Arkansas, he arrived in New York City in 1969 and immediately found his place among the avant-garde and creative music community — performing with Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, and Stanley Cowell, recording for the storied Strata-East label, and helping create the landmark Piano Choir project. His compositions have been performed by Ahmad Jamal, David Murray, and Stanley Cowell. A musician's musician and a true elder of the tradition.
