Sonelius Smith - Harlem Jazz Series
| Learn More |
A pianist, composer, and keeper of jazz's deepest traditions, Sonelius Smith has been one of the most quietly extraordinary voices in the music for over five decades. Born in Memphis and educated in Arkansas, he arrived in New York City in 1969 and immediately found his place among the avant-garde and creative music community — performing with Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, and Stanley Cowell, recording for the storied Strata-East label, and helping create the landmark Piano Choir project. His compositions have been performed by Ahmad Jamal, David Murray, and Stanley Cowell. A musician's musician and a true elder of the tradition.
