Mary Salstrom: Sunlight and Space/Summer Landscapes of Sweden and Illinois
Prince Street Gallery is pleased to announce MARY SALSTROM: SUNLIGHT AND SPACE/SUMMER LANDSCAPES OF SWEDEN AND ILLINOIS beginning April 21. The opening reception is Thursday, April 23rd from 5 - 8 pm. A Gallery talk is scheduled for 3 pm on Saturday, April 25.
Sunlight and Space, is an exhibition of recent oil paintings on canvas and oil pastels on paper by Mary Salstrom. Compositions of landscape spaces formed in natural light reflect Salstrom's delight in visualizing landscape spaces with colors influenced by sunlight. Inspired by both imagination and memory, her sites are chosen where rural architecture and occasionally figures add a sense of the warmth of human presence. The sunlit rural spaces of the Illinois summer are sites of the Rock River Valley paintings. The summer light in Sweden, with longer daylight, as perceived on lakes and buildings’ surfaces and gardens is a mesmerizing influence for the choice of sites where these works were painted in southern Sweden. Many of these works have been made in situ; larger works were made in the studio using smaller works for reference.
Mary Salstrom lives in New York City with her husband, Brent Porter. As an architect and professor at Pratt Institute for 47 years, Brent has always supported her work as a painter. Graced with yearly summers to paint in Illinois for more than 30 years, Salstrom developed her relationship with the land and the light. To help Salstrom realize a lifelong goal, her husband accompanied her on several trips to Sweden to find, experience, and paint the landscapes where her Swedish ancestors lived.
Salstrom has an MFA from Brooklyn College and a BFA from Pratt Institute. She also studied painting at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and at the Art Students’ League, New York City. Her works are featured in several collections: Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York; Rockford Art Museum, Illinois; Oregon Public Library and Art Collection, Oregon, Illinois; and Scott Memorial Study Collection; Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. Her work was featured in an article by Andreas Jemn in the Swedish journal, Drömmen Om Amerika. A catalog, Mary Salstrom: The Prairie and the Sea, with an essay by John Goodrich, was published during her exhibition at the Burpee Museum, Rockford, Illinois.
