Two American works, Eric Whitacre’s When David Heard and Jonathan David’s Stabat Mater, form the cornerstone of this program: Whitacre’s heart wrenching work utilizes the powerful beauty of silence and empty moments to depict the devastation felt at the loss of a child, a technique also employed in David’s musical meditation for the mourning Mother of Christ that is heightened with his use of appoggiaturas as a “sighing” figure. Rounding out the program are Dan Forrest’s eponymous piece, a setting of Mark Twain’s epitaph for his beloved daughter, was written in response to a family tragedy; James MacMillan’s A Child’s Prayer written in memory of the victims of the Dunblane shooting; and works by Herbert Howell, Daniel Gawthrop, and Jake Runestad.
