Shawn Lovato's Cycles of Animation
Shawn Lovato is a bassist and composer whose work is part of a scene of musical experimentation that spans the many traditions, approaches, and styles of creative contemporary music. His quintet, Cycles of Animation, combines elements of jazz, chamber music, and punk rock, and balances broad improvisational approaches with highly composed rhythmic interaction. Lovato composes the music with the personalities of each improviser in mind, as he manages contemporary rhythmic and melodic language while focusing on the prevailing colors and timbres of each musician's distinct sound. The group's debut album was released by Skirl Records in October 2017 and has been described as having "a good deal of rhythmic dynamism and a fluid, loosely-structured sound, a convincing statement from Lovato and a sign of even better things to come" (All About Jazz) and as being "a showcase for an organic mosaic of colors, rhythms, and textures. Resorting to clever structural vistas, Lovato penned engaging pieces that emphasize the collective and the individual alike" (Jazz Trail).
