A trumpeter of stunning clarity and compositional daring, Jonathan Finlayson is one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary jazz. Born in Oakland, California, he came of age in the demanding creative environment of Steve Coleman's Five Elements — one of the most conceptually rigorous ensembles in modern jazz — and has since built a career of remarkable range and distinction. The New York Times has called him "an incisive and often surprising trumpeter, who is fascinated with composition." He has performed with Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, Craig Harris, Ravi Coltrane, Mary Halvorson, Vijay Iyer, and Craig Taborn, and has released three acclaimed albums on Pi Recordings.
