Admission may increase depending upon a given week's performance schedule Superb Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Now Christopher is gaining respect amongst fans, critics and his peers as one of the most versatile musicians in the world. His 2012 debut album Quatuor de Force certainly establishes his ability to front a group and write his own soulful, melodically indelible tunes. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his recent album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B—with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley's post-bop sensuality–but his improvising is very rigorous and co

Larry Goldings/Peter Bernstein/Bill Stewart - Jazz Standard
Through April 21, 2019 - New York

In the 1950s and '60s, Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, and Larry Young pioneered and popularized the jazz organ trio. For the past quarter–century, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart have taken that fundamental concept into fresh territory, recording eleven masterful albums under various members' names or as a collective unit. These rotating roles show the equality of each member's contribution to the whole and their individual stature as world–class bandleaders. Equally adept at roiling bebop intensity, gentle ballad expressions, and knotty fistfuls of funk, the group has been less active in the last few years, owing to the demands of their individual careers, so every new album and tour is cause for celebration. Ramshackle Serenade (Pirouet) is their first studio session in twelve years and a welcome return for what DownBeat calls "a killer organ trio barrage that's deep in the pocket." Larry Goldings – organ, piano Peter Bernstein – guitar Bill Stewart – drums

Terence Blanchard ft The E-Collective - Blue Note
Through April 21, 2019 - New York

Music and art have the power to change hearts and souls," expresses composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard — a belief brought to life through the music of Blanchard and his E-Collective. This revolutionary ensemble thrives off the perfect mixture of Blanchard's genius and the innovations of four young musical pioneers: guitarist Charles Altura, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist David "DJ" Ginyard Jr., and drummer Oscar Seaton. It was while recording the scores for Spike Lee's Inside Man and Kasi Lemmons' Talk to Me that Blanchard and Seaton first dreamt of a band that layered grooves teeming with funk, R&B, and blues colors. Years later, that dream came to fruition and formed the foundation for the E-Collective's signature sound.

Saints and Sinners - Groove

There's the down and dirty blues of their Chicago and Mississippi inspirations, the hedonistic excess of '70s rock and funk, plus the here and now – trying to create something new. Guitarist/vocalist Christian Botta's melodic leads and slide guitar have entertained blues audiences from Memphis to Budapest. Bassist Dave Gerstein is a NYC cat whose fat groove doesn't get in the way of his need to rock. Drummer/vocalist Mike Rodbard hails from Chicago and has toured the world with the legendary Lonnie Brooks as well as fronting his own jazz rock outfit. The band's been kicking it in NYC since 2017. They've played The Shrine, The Bitter End, Bar Chord and other hotspots. Their self-titled debut, released in Nov 2018, contains quality originals and classic covers:

Through April 24, 2019 - New York

Here's Giovanni Russonello in the NY Times, 12.31.2018: "Quietly, beneath the radar of even most jazz lovers, the big band has been charging back. For a long time, the large ensemble has seemed a clunky vestige of American music's past — outmoded since bebop supplanted swing in the 1950s — but a bumper crop of enterprising, conservatory–trained composers sees it differently: as a vessel of grandiose possibility." The 2016 album Real Enemies by Darcy James Argue's Secret Society was nominated for both a GRAMMY Award nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and for Jazz Album of the Year (Group) in Canada's JUNO Awards. Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, writes Giovanni Russonello, "is now renowned in the jazz world. At 43, he has become a mentor to many of today's young big–band composers…'It seems like no matter what, the possibilities of writing for big band are so musically irresistible that people keep finding a way to make it work,' Mr. Argue said. 'Which is really inspiring.'"

Christopher Mcbrite - Minton's Playhouse
April 28, 2019 - Harlem

Admission may increase depending upon a given week's performance schedule. Superb Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts.

Stefon Harris & Blackout - Jazz Standard
April 28, 2019 - New York

A few days into the new year, on January 4, Stefon Harris & Blackout rolled into Jazz Standard and blew us away with the creativity and cohesion of their interplay. Now the acclaimed vibraphonist and his quintet are back for this multi–night stand. When DownBeat's John Murph attended the group's Kennedy Center in D.C. in 2018, he heard "an exploratory, tightly focused set that placed high stakes on rhythmic agility, communicative alertness and spontaneous invention…Each member admirably held their own next to Harris, whose virtuosic and imaginative improvisations can certainly prove unnerving for lesser talents." In 2018, Sonic Creed(Motema Music) was the first new release from Stefon Harris' Blackout since 2009's GRAMMY–nominated Urbanus. Family, community, legacy: "These core assets of the Black community are the messages of Sonic Creed," says Stefon Harris, "and we honor our legacy by exploring the music of masters such as Bobby Hutcherson, Abbey Lincoln, Wayne Shorter and Horace Silver. Their music is timeless and is the literal aural expression of those community assets."

The Manhattan Transfer - Blue Note
Through April 28, 2019 - New York

Beginning with their first performances in the early 1970s, The Manhattan Transfer have become the cornerstones of contemporary music. Originally launched by Tim Hauser in 1969, Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Laurel Masse were the group by 1972. Cheryl Bentyne joined the group in 1979 after Laurel Masse left. Known for their amazing harmony and versatility, incorporating pop, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, swing, symphonic, and a cappella music, the group was signed by the legendary Ahmet Ertegun to Atlantic Records. The group made their recording debut with their self-titled album in 1975. Known primarily as an East Coast cult act, they expanded their following by starring in their own 1975 CBS-TV variety series as a summer replacement for the Cher Bono Show. Starting as an underground group in New York City, The Manhattan Transfer garnered international popularity when "Chanson D'Amour" from the 1976 Coming Out album became a number one hit in Europe. One of the co-writers on The Junction – the group's new album which draws inspiration in part from The Transfer's classic 1975 version of Glenn Miller's "Tuxedo Junction" — is the group's new member, bass vocalist Trist Curless....
