Home for the Holidays - Quad Cinema
December 17, 2019 - Manhattan

Originally deemed a box office turkey, director Jodie Foster's under-appreciated and queer-forward feast of holiday high jinx follows recently unemployed art restorer and single mom Claudia (Holly Hunter) home to Baltimore for the holidays. The familial chaos that ensues includes everything from bickering parents, a problematic type-A aunt, a teenage daughter on the brink of womanhoodand the official outing of Claudia's (mostly) unapologetically gay brother, played with precise panache by a baby-faced Robert Downey Jr. Working from a script by W.D. Richter (Invasion of the Body Snatchers), Foster's second directorial effort maintains its infectious warmth and undeniable authenticity even throughout its many madcap mishaps. Featuring a terrific supporting ensemble of unsupportive characters including Hollywood stalwarts Anne Bancroft, Geraldine Chaplin, and Charles Durning, and up-and-comers Claire Danes (fresh off My So-Called Life) and Dylan McDermott.

Orpheus - Quad Cinema
December 18, 2019 - Manhattan

On the occasion of Jill Mulleady's first solo exhibition in the U.S. Fight-or-Flight at the Swiss Institute, the Quad presents this special screening of Jean Cocteau's Orpheus. Selected by Mulleady and introduced by n+1 film critic A.S. Hamrah. Jean Cocteau's gorgeous, dreamy update of the classic Greek myth follows celebrated French poet Orpheus (Jean Marais) on his quest for inspirationacross the border from the world of the living into the land of the dead. Overwhelmed with feelings for both a beguiling princess clad in black (Maria Casars) and his loving wife Eurydice (Marie Da), his passions gradually lead him toward tragedy. With impactful low-tech effects (who can forget that mirrored portal?) and melodramatic swells, Orpheus still towers as a masterpiece of cinematic poetry.

Relentless Invention: New Korean Cinema - Film at Lincoln Center - Walter Reade Theater
December 22, 2019 - New York

The South Korean film industry has been in the midst of a remarkable, decades-long creative explosion, with Bong Joon Ho, Hong Sang-soo, and Park Chan-wook jolting new life into art-house and genre cinema alike. With the end of the nation's military rule and the relaxing of government censorship, Korean film experienced the kind of renaissance that hadn't been seen since its golden age in the 1950s. This new generation of filmmakers took more than political and social issues as their inspiration: they re-energized national cinema in the late 1990s and early 2000s with homegrown blockbusters that imbued the pleasures of pop cinema with a subversive, gleefully inventive approach to genre and a sharp sociopolitical edge. From heart-rending romances to supernatural shockers, ultra-stylish thrillers to offbeat comedies, this survey celebrates a vital movement that's as audaciously innovative as it is unabashedly entertaining.
