Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 29, 2019 - New York

I make objects from cardboard and clay. My work, however, is heavily rooted in the practice of drawing. Drawing is a linear toola tangible way to investigate, think and visually translate an idea into space. It is a generative process that propels my explorations from description to interpretation and abstraction where new questions and possibilities arise. A line can manifest itself in a myriad of ways from the simple to the abstruse. Clay is liberating as a drawing material. The material is the structure, the line itself. With cardboard, the line is often created by an intense infrastructure that demarcates where two planes almost meet. As a maker, I oscillate between translating line through negative space and drawing out loud in three dimensions. These two distinct approaches yield sculptural work in cardboard and clay that is seemingly disparate yet exploit the buoyancy of line and a commitment to hand building. They operate like dialects of a language. They speak to each other, and most often run parallel, but I always await their collision.

Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 30, 2019 - New York

Well look at what a female-run cult looks like (spoiler alert: sometimes there are matching blonde wigs), what makes lady cult leaders so darn good at their job, and why male cult leaders tend to get all the coverage. And since it wouldnt be cult-y without some (consensual!!) groupthink, well be starting + ending the night with two rousing rounds of cult-themed trivia. Youll laugh, youll shudder, youll learn some historyso that next time a lady cultist asksyou to join her home group, you can say that youre, um, busy that night.Doors 6:30 PM, show 7:00 PM.Tickets $14 in advance, $16 at the door.21+This event is mixed seated and standing room. Visiting Lecture | Piet Eckert, ea2: Strategic Methodologies - Frederick P. Rose Auditorium
October 31, 2019 - New York

Architecture may react to a context that is increasingly driven by the massive impact of social, political, economic, and ecological factors, attempting to maintain a singular sense of cohesion. The contradictory has become the contemporary program of our discipline. A strategic organization of space is one that mixes elements, value systems, and action logic. It opens up a combination of essential incoherencies. The target of strategic architecture is to manage the coexistence of conflicting values.

An expert at comedy born of desperation, Jamie's performance is humble and unguarded. Adkins deftly escorts the audience along his poetic journey with sidesplitting wit. All Grades.

Minerva Cuevas: Disidencia - The Mishkin Gallery
Through November 01, 2019 - New York

NEW YORK, NY The Mishkin Gallery presents Disidencia, a solo exhibition by artist Minerva Cuevas. The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 29, 6 to 8 pm, and will be on view through to November 1, 2019.For her first solo exhibition in New York, artist Minerva Cuevas presents a body of video work that makes concise connections between the consequences of dominant economic ideologies and urgent, global ecological and social issues. Gathering eight video installations and projections, Disidencia (Dissent) brings together a range of visual strategies that Cuevas has deployed to engage with such topics as the decay of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, corporate Americas insatiable brand of globalization, and a video cartography of protests and resistance throughout her home city. At a time when divisive politics are on the rise and deregulation and privatization seem almost unavoidable, Cuevas shows us an alternative to such dangers and empowers our own social relations. Titled after one of Cuevass emblematic works, Disidencia serves to establish opposition and active contestation, explains Gabriel Bogossian, who has co-curated the exhibition alongside Solange Farkas, dire... John Zorn: New Masada Quartet - Village Vanguard
November 02, 2019 - New York

Composer and saxophonist John Zorn is the creator and curator of a specific yet far-reaching strain of the musical avant-garde...He transcended comparisons to other improvising musicians long ago: Far better to draw lines from the quintessential Downtowner to, say, filmmakers Robert Altman and John Cassavetes, in his repeated use of a trusted, versatile troupe of his design. Or to Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann, for his laughably prolific output. Or to any number of artists whove expanded the parameters and function of ethnic tradition. Jazz Times

Jamie Adkins - BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center
November 02, 2019 - New York

Virtuoso clown Jamie Adkins wanders onto stage with a new show, delighted to find the audience waiting. Knowing he has just the thing, Jamie struggles to build the scene around him using everyday objects. Things go awry as his props prove most unhelpful: his ladder disintegrates under foot! He wrangles an animated chair, tussles with a pesky hat, negotiates a precarious slack wire and juggles almost everything. An expert at comedy born of desperation, Jamie's performance is humble and unguarded. Adkins deftly escorts the audience along his poetic journey with sidesplitting wit. All Ages.

LESS BITTER, MORE GLITTER Album Release Party - Red Room
November 05, 2019 - New York

WHO: Kendra Cunningham (Boston Comedy Festival, Last Comic Standing) and Katina Corrao (Broad City, Lasers in the Jungle at UCB) are throwing a party to celebrate the October 29th release of their album LESS BITTER, MORE GLITTER on 800 Pound Gorilla Records! WHAT: LESS BITTER, MORE GLITTER is a comedy album by Kendra Cunningham and Katina Corrao, brilliantly combining Kendra's sardonic deadpan with Katina's sweetly unhinged humor, out on 800 Pound Gorilla Records. Look, they've been in New York for a long time. No one would blame them for telling us all where to go and riding off into the sunset (after scoring one last dollar slice). But rather than succumb to bitterness, they've decided to throw some glitter on it, honey! And we're all the more blessed for it. Join them for this very special album release party!

Contralto Kirsten Sollek and tenor John Riesen are the featured soloists in Rachmaninoff's Vespers. Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawfords extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia.Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

An opening reception will be held in the gallery on October 25 from 6 to 8 pm. Doors and windows are the elements that often appear in Parks work. They accentuate the separation between the exterior and the realm of the interior, while also enabling us to overcome that boundary and put two distinct worlds into dialogue with one another. Opening, closing, and moving through passageways is one of the most banal acts of our daily life, however, this simple gesture has a strong significance in our social life, culture, and psyche. Push/Pull focuses on this act of opening and closing, using the door as a space where sculptures and drawings can play with depth, plane, and light.Image: Boohri Park opening, 2019, 30 x 24cm, ink on paper.

When I Wanted Everything: New Work by Alex Sewell - TOTAH Gallery
Through December 18, 2019 - New York

TOTAH Gallery on the Lower East Side presents When I Wanted Everything, an exhibition of new works by Alex Sewell, opening October 24th, from 6-8pm, on view through December 18th. The images populating Alex Sewells paintings archive an ongoing dialectic between the artists personal memory and the collective identity of the American psyche. A restive sense of melancholy threads through each work on exhibit using a disarmingly personable tone. Sewell meticulously destabilizes all-too-familiar vistas of American suburbia, imposing a translucent scrim of violence onto objects ordinarily earmarked for passive consumption. Video games, television, toys of every kind become eerily macabre, giving the lie to the placid everydayness of his themes.

Using the materiality of print and handmade paper, the two- and three-dimensional works in this exhibition speak to cross-cultural and deeply embedded global struggles. Here, the precarity of paper becomes a metaphor for the precarity of place.

Verdi: Creating Otello and Falstaff - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 05, 2020 - Manhattan

After Aida in 1871, except for occasional projects, Giuseppe Verdi (18131901), Italy's pre-eminent composer, retired from opera at the age of 58. This, however, did not prevent constant pleas from his publisher, Giulio Ricordi (18401912), and his future librettist, Arrigo Boito (18421918), for the maestro to return to the operatic stage. Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 12, 2020 - Manhattan

John Singer Sargent (18561925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and they demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological sensitivity, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent's sitters on canvas. The first major exhibition to explore the artist's expressive portraits in charcoal, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal will recognize the sheer scale of Sargent's achievement as a portrait draftsman. Important international loans, from both public and private collections, will showcase Sargent's sitters, many of them famous for their roles in politics, society, and the arts. The exhibition will also explore the friendships and the networks of patronage that underpinned Sargent's practice as a portrait draftsman in Edwardian Britain and Progressive Era America.

Guercino: Virtuoso Draftsman - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through February 02, 2020 - Manhattan

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (15911666), was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. The Morgan owns more than twenty-five works by the artist, and these are the subject of a focused exhibition, supplemented by a handful of loans from public and private New York collections, to be held at the Morgan in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition will include sheets from all moments of the artist's career. His early awareness of the work of the Carracci in Bologna is documented by figures drawn from everyday life as well as brilliant caricatures; two drawings for Guercino's own drawing manual are further testament to his interest in questions of academic practice. Following his career, a range of preparatory drawings includes studies made in connection with his earliest altarpieces as well as his mature masterpieces, including multiple studies for several projects, allowing the visitor to see Guercino's mind at work as he reconsidered his ideas. The Morgan's holdings also include studies for engravings, as well as highly finished landscape and figure drawing... (read more)
