Mike Casey Trio - City Vineyard
January 31, 2020 - New York

New York based Mike Casey is a melody poet. The story-telling songwriter, producer, and sonic alchemist is a multi-talented force whose soul stirring saxophone sound and inventive use of phrasing reaches out with love and embraces your musical desires, one note at a time.Bringing the joy of jazz across genre lines to a diverse young audience around the world, Mikes music passed 4 million streams in the first two years of his recording career (against all odds, without a record label or a team - an anomaly in the genre). On a mission to be a passionate vessel for jazz in the 21st century, his searing sound, always aiming to connect emotionally and tell a story, demands the attention of the listener. This is not your parents elevator music.Im not interested in sizzle over substance, he says. Improvising, or as like to think of it, spontaneous composing, is not about displaying skill for ego's sake. I aim to deliver each musical statement with power, honesty, and passion to connect with audiences.

Heres what people are saying about his recent album, Water Prayers of Bass Clarinet:Water Prayers is evidence of Austerlitzs dazzling technique on an unforgiving instrument, without ever selling the emotional intensity of the music short. This music is a spectacular product of a creative spirit, awakened by the dormant powers of the soul to further the powers of human consciousness.- Raul Da Gama RoseWater Prayers is about jazz, the bass clarinet, and world music. This recording sounds fabulous. Its more than education; its about opening up new parts of your brain.- The Vinyl Anachronist

A FivePointz of Our Own - Children's Museum of the Arts
January 31, 2020 - Hudson Square

Queens is the home to many graffiti legends who turned a former water meter manufacturing plant into their haven for expression and artistic liberation from a corporatized art world. The name "5 Pointz" was reflective of curator John Cohen (Meres One) believing the building to be a place where the 5 boroughs of NYC came together to create. This building was recently torn down, which put many Queen's residences in a period of mourning of the loss of a cultural hub in their own backyard. Today in the studio, we'll build off of our base building and begin to cover it in lettering and illustration unrestrained by the limits of paper or canvas.

Meanwhile, Imre was having his mind blown by the psychedelic prose of Wilhelm Blsche, a proto-hippie visionary scientist of cosmic dimensions. In this episode of their ongoing adventures, they discover that a journey into the natural world can be the trippiest trip of all.

Leo Sherman Quartet - "Tonewheel" Record Release - Cafe Bohemia
February 01, 2020 - New York

New York-based bassist/composer Leo Sherman impregnates his debut album, Tonewheel, with diverse, rewarding content that includes catchy themes, stimulating improvised moments, and energy-filled vamps. The album, conceived as a musical self-portrait, reflects his existence from an early childhood until the present day, and describes sensitive phases such as when he and his family had to run away from Leningrad in 1987, his difficult upbringing in Baltimore, as well as his maturation as a musician in New York. He plays the albums nine originals alongside saxophone sensation Paul Jones, adventurer guitarist Alex Goodman, eclectic pianist Ben Winkelman, and elegant drummer Dan Pugach. The first track, In Flight, unveils the quintets graciously toned expressions. "The Transfiguration of Benjamin Banneker" by Theodora Skipitares - La MaMa
Through February 02, 2020 - NY

This production of magical puppetry, drumming and dance celebrates a pioneering African American astronomer who lived in Maryland from 1731 to 1806 and became one of his era's most outstanding engineers and astronomers. Theodora Skipitares is regarded as an outstanding master of giant puppet plays and no world premiere by her should be missed. Benjamin Banneker was a free man whose father and grandfather were formerly enslaved and whose grandmother was an English indentured servant. He taught himself mathematics and astronomy and became an outstanding scientist of his time, but is barely recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries. The play features dance, animated film, live music, puppetry and a multi-generational cast. Skipitares imagines that if Banneker were alive today, his passion for astronomy could have driven him into the Space Program. Part Two of the play considers how the development of the American space program interacted with the struggle for civil rights, centering on the case of Edward Dwight, Jr., who was selected to be the first African American astronaut trainee in 1961 but was not chosen by NASA to fly into space. Dwight resigned from the Air Force ... (read more)

Guercino: Virtuoso Draftsman - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through February 02, 2020 - Manhattan

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (15911666), was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. The Morgan owns more than twenty-five works by the artist, and these are the subject of a focused exhibition, supplemented by a handful of loans from public and private New York collections, to be held at the Morgan in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition will include sheets from all moments of the artist's career. His early awareness of the work of the Carracci in Bologna is documented by figures drawn from everyday life as well as brilliant caricatures; two drawings for Guercino's own drawing manual are further testament to his interest in questions of academic practice.
