Visiting Lecture | Sandra Kaji-O'Grady: Laboratory: How Buildings Speak for and About Scientific Research - The Great Hall at Cooper Union
November 12, 2019 - New York

Private and public institutions for biosciences research have invested much in the construction of new buildings over the past two decades. They do so in the belief that architecture will accelerate research, placate the community, enrich organizational reputation, assist recruitment of star scientists and attract funding. While these ambitions are shared, the architecture that has resulted is extraordinarily diverse, resisting any conformation to a typological ideal. Illustrated by key examples and insights from philosophers and historians of science, this lecture will examine the specific ways in which laboratory architectures have met, indeed, exceeded the specific configurations and dispositions of its scientist clients.

Character Traits; Or Can the Early Twentieth Century Please End - Frederick P. Rose Auditorium
November 13, 2019 - New York

The literature of early twentieth-century typographic industries presented a highly edited view of lettering history in support of their own products. The result was an historical sleight of hand that presented the period's technological and aesthetic presumptions as timeless fact. These late-Industrial aesthetics continue to exert a disproportionate influence on contemporary digital type design. In this talk, Russell Maret will attempt to tease out a different historical view of lettering, one that proposes that Industrial aesthetics should not be treated as the rule but the aberration in letter design. Along the way, he'll touch on related topics such as Is legibility worth it? Are digital letterforms type? and other hot-button issues.

Wild Night With Emily - Housing Works Bookstore Cafe & Bar
November 13, 2019 - New York

In the mid-19th century, Emily Dickinson is writing prolifically, baking gingerbread, and enjoying a passionate, lifelong romantic relationship with another woman, her friend and sister-in-law Susan... yes this is the iconic American poet, popularly thought to have been a recluse. Beloved comic Molly Shannon leads in this humorous yet bold reappraisal of Dickinson, informed by her private letters. While seeking publication of some of the 1,775 poems written during her lifetime, Emily finds herself facing a troupe of male literary gatekeepers too confused by her genius to take her work seriously. Instead her work attracts the attention of an ambitious woman editor, who also sees Emily as a convenient cover for her own role in buttoned-up Amherst's most bizarre love triangle. A timely critique of how women's history is rewritten, Wild Nights with Emilyremains vibrant, irreverent and tendera perhaps closer depiction of Emily Dickinson's real life than anything seen before.

The Devil Wears Prada - Gramercy Theatre
November 13, 2019 - New York

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADAThe Devil Wears Prada is the musical embodiment of a generational shift. Built on a diverse array of heavy, dark, melodic and genre-defying music; hardened and sharpened by putting in road work together since the days when they had to skip class to tour: The Devil Wears Prada is at the forefront of a movement that bridges the gap between Rockstar Mayhem and the Vans Warped Tour.Mike Hranica is blessed with a commanding roar, but infuses the proceedings with a literary sensibility, a commitment to self-evaluation and a painstaking modesty that levels the playing field between performer and listener beneath the surface.Rhythm guitarist Jeremy DePoyster contributes the hook-laden underbelly to Prada's brutal musical beast, handling the "clean" singing with a fine-tuned abandon to rival the pop stars dominating the charts. He grew up listening to Rob Zombie and Korn, but his iPod these days is packed with just about everything one can name. His singing vocals shine particularly on 'Care More,' a heavily electronics infused song with a dark mood. "There's so much of this crappy auto-tuned singing thing happening right now. It's disappointing to me because I've... (read more)

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically differentone is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, SpainCrawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawfords extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia.Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

ACTOR/SINGER SCOTT RANERI PRESENTS NEW YORK SOLO CABARET DEBUT SHOWTHE MARVELOUS MR. MARZOFOUR-SHOW RUN BEGINS AT DONT TELL MAMA ON OCTOBER 14 AT 7 PM When Actor/Singer Scott Raneri was pondering a theme for his New York Solo Cabaret Debut Show, he decided to go back to his rootsliterally. Last December, Raneri registered to take a DNA test with the ubiquitous genetic testing company 23andMe. Raneri wanted to learn more about his ancestry and his health profile. When he found he was a genetic match with a cousin he didnt know he had, that led to a more startling discoverythat his grandfather was NOT the man who was married to his grandmother, but was a family friend named Butch Marzo. Hence, the shows title. Ive wanted to create a solo cabaret show for years, but I didnt want it to be a show about my love life or a tribute to a singer, Raneri says. I wanted to develop a show based on a really original idea. When I took that DNA test, I never thought that family secrets taken to the grave would be revealed though science and it would end up being the catalyst for a show. Once I discovered the truth about my grandmothers husbands and lovers, I knew this was... (read more)

Rome connects the music heard here. Berlioz's cantata La mort de Cloptre was a Prix de Rome candidate. Although it didn't win the prize, its dramatic vocal line and vivid orchestral writing give it riveting operatic power. Bizet paid tribute to the city in his orchestral suite Roma, noteworthy for its lithesome Scherzo and whirling Tarantella finale. Respighi's spectacularly orchestrated tone poem Pines of Rome paint the city's greenery in technicolor sound, including frolicking children, holy chants, bird song, and a ghostly Roman legion.

American persimmons, much tastier than the larger Asian species, will be falling from trees east of The Ramble. Tart crab apples, which taste like tamarinds, will abound throughout the park, as will the sweet berries of the Japanese Yew. Another "fruit (botancially speaking) is the pod of the Kentucky coffee tree, a leguminous species growing a few minutes walk north of the Boathouse. The seeds inside the pods and on the ground make the world's best-tasting caffeine-free coffee, even though this tree isn't related to coffee. It's also an awesome seasoning for chocolate. You can add it to hot chocolate, chocolate pudding, and chocolate truffles, with amazing results. We've also been finding choice blewit mushrooms under the tree in 2017 and 2018.All root vegetables are in season in autumn. Push/Pull - Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space
Through November 17, 2019 - New York

Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space is pleased to present Push/Pull, an exhibition of new work by LES Studio Program Resident Boohri Park, on view from October 25, 2019 through November 17, 2019. An opening reception will be held in the gallery on October 25 from 6 to 8 pm. Doors and windows are the elements that often appear in Parks work. They accentuate the separation between the exterior and the realm of the interior, while also enabling us to overcome that boundary and put two distinct worlds into dialogue with one another. Opening, closing, and moving through passageways is one of the most banal acts of our daily life, however, this simple gesture has a strong significance in our social life, culture, and psyche. Push/Pull focuses on this act of opening and closing, using the door as a space where sculptures and drawings can play with depth, plane, and light.Image: Boohri Park opening, 2019, 30 x 24cm, ink on paper.

Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. As a bandleader for the last two decades, he has also continually grown as a composer. With his latest recording (and second for Mack Avenue Records), Seeds From The Underground, Garrett has given notice that these qualities have not only become more impressive, but have provided him with the platform to expand his horizons and communicate his musical vision clearly. Seeds From The Underground is a powerful return to the straight-ahead, acoustic and propulsive quartet format that showcases Garrett's extraordinary abilities. For Garrett, Seeds From The Underground is a special recording. It once again consists of all original compositions, and is truly an homage to those who have inspired and influenced... (read more)

"The Whites,' written and directee by William Electric Black - Theater for the New City
Through November 24, 2019 - New York

Being condemned to an underclass because of one's dark skin is all-too familiar to African-Americans. William Electric Black's newest play, "The Whites," aims to illuminate the feelings that accompany this experience for the benefit of all the races. It's done with a unique concept of race reversal. He offers us a family drama in which the situation and characters are culturally Black but the cast is White. We watch the Caucasian family of Harris and Rasheeda White contend with gun violence, school segregation and the aftermath of prison. For this family and their surrounding community, the everyday experiences of economic, political and social injustice are imposed by African-Americans.Stylistically, the play is something like an "Our Town" in which a cast of white characters has been placed into a modern day Black story line. Like "Our Town," it is played with very little scenery or props. The minimalism is deliberate: the people and their social position are to be our focus. Scenes and their transitions are underscored by live acoustic bass played by Marc Schmied, imparting a jazzical feel. The cast of nine is directed by the author.

When I Wanted Everything: New Work by Alex Sewell - TOTAH Gallery
Through December 18, 2019 - New York

TOTAH Gallery on the Lower East Side presents When I Wanted Everything, an exhibition of new works by Alex Sewell, opening October 24th, from 6-8pm, on view through December 18th. The images populating Alex Sewells paintings archive an ongoing dialectic between the artists personal memory and the collective identity of the American psyche. A restive sense of melancholy threads through each work on exhibit using a disarmingly personable tone. Sewell meticulously destabilizes all-too-familiar vistas of American suburbia, imposing a translucent scrim of violence onto objects ordinarily earmarked for passive consumption. Video games, television, toys of every kind become eerily macabre, giving the lie to the placid everydayness of his themes.

Using the materiality of print and handmade paper, the two- and three-dimensional works in this exhibition speak to cross-cultural and deeply embedded global struggles. Here, the precarity of paper becomes a metaphor for the precarity of place.

Verdi: Creating Otello and Falstaff - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 05, 2020 - Manhattan

After Aida in 1871, except for occasional projects, Giuseppe Verdi (18131901), Italy's pre-eminent composer, retired from opera at the age of 58. This, however, did not prevent constant pleas from his publisher, Giulio Ricordi (18401912), and his future librettist, Arrigo Boito (18421918), for the maestro to return to the operatic stage. Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 12, 2020 - Manhattan

John Singer Sargent (18561925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and they demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological sensitivity, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent's sitters on canvas. The first major exhibition to explore the artist's expressive portraits in charcoal, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal will recognize the sheer scale of Sargent's achievement as a portrait draftsman. Important international loans, from both public and private collections, will showcase Sargent's sitters, many of them famous for their roles in politics, society, and the arts. The exhibition will also explore the friendships and the networks of patronage that underpinned Sargent's practice as a portrait draftsman in Edwardian Britain and Progressive Era America.

Guercino: Virtuoso Draftsman - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through February 02, 2020 - Manhattan

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (15911666), was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. The Morgan owns more than twenty-five works by the artist, and these are the subject of a focused exhibition, supplemented by a handful of loans from public and private New York collections, to be held at the Morgan in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition will include sheets from all moments of the artist's career. His early awareness of the work of the Carracci in Bologna is documented by figures drawn from everyday life as well as brilliant caricatures; two drawings for Guercino's own drawing manual are further testament to his interest in questions of academic practice. Following his career, a range of preparatory drawings includes studies made in connection with his earliest altarpieces as well as his mature masterpieces, including multiple studies for several projects, allowing the visitor to see Guercino's mind at work as he reconsidered his ideas. The Morgan's holdings also include studies for engravings, as well as highly finished landscape and figure drawing... (read more)

Illusions of the Photographer combines a full career retrospectivethe first on Michals to be organized by a New York City museumwith an artist's-choice show, as Michals plumbs the Morgan's vaults for treasures both revered and long-forgotten.

The ballet was choreographed by Lonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso.
