Fife and Drom - Rockwood Music Hall
February 14, 2020 - New York

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed...Something BLUES.Fife & Drom is the musical brainchild of husband and wife team Mark Marshall and Abby Ahmad. Though the couple grew up as neighbors in a tiny Pennsylvania town, destiny arranged their first meeting, oddly enough, over two decades later at the "Crossroads Cafe" in Brooklyn, NY. One might say their collaboration was fated. The duo pen original songs inspired by the works of blues pioneers Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Son House and beyond. Their name pays tribute to fife and drum blues music, a highly influential genre which emerged from Mississippi, the heart of Delta blues, as well as a nod to the dutch word "drom", meaning "a group moving together with purpose".

Miss Christian and this multi-tasking brood of musical dandies (Sasha Brown, Matt Bogdanow, Chris Giarmo, Josh Myers and Jonathan Anderson) comprises their song set of dream hymns and odes to imaginary landscapes that reside somewhere between a vast theoretical sea and the deep American south.

Mike Dillon Band Feat. Jean Paul Gaster - Rockwood Music Hall
February 14, 2020 - New York

How many artists have been praised a "punk rock provocateur," "jazz vibraphone visionary," and "percussion virtuoso" in the same sentence? There's only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Primus, Rickie Lee Jones, and Ani Difranco, or collaborations such as Nolatet, Garage a Trois, The Dead Kenny G's, Critters Buggin or bands he has led, including Mike Dillon Band, Mike Dillon's New Orleans Punk Rock Percussion Consortium, Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for 25 years now. life-is-not-a-football-600x600Over the past decade, Mike Dillon has released a number of acclaimed albums, intertwining a range of influences from Zappa-esque eccentricity to Fishbone punk funk, D.C. Go-Go to Milt Jackson-influenced vibraphone majesty. Never before, however, has he recorded music so personal and committed to a sustained mood as his latest album, Functioning Broke. The recording finds Dillon solo on vibraphone and various percussion, building each track into its own minimalist, but multi-dimensional auditory landscape.

In 2013, some five years after the group began playing, they signed with Blue Note Records and set out to assemble their debut record. Comprised of originals and covers, studio recordings and live performances, that debut was called No Fools, No Fun. Released in the summer of 2014, it was supported by a tour of the U.S. This year, the trio took the stage at the MusiCares charity event honoring Person of the Year Award recipient Dolly Parton, and performed Parton's "The Grass Is Blue". Motor Sales Pete and J of Harper Blynn - Rockwood Music Hall
February 15, 2020 - New York

21+Motor Sales is the brainchild of long term friends and collaborators Pete Harper & J.Blynn. Starting as a side-pet-project from their longtime band Harper Bynn, the pair recorded an EP of all new material with friend Shawn Everett (The War on Drugs, Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius), which was subsequently lost in a power surge at a New York recording studio. So the three went back to work, now with more songs and ideas, and recorded a full album. The project quickly became the pair's main focus, and Motor Sales was born. Informed by the city in which it was written and recorded, this eponymous debut is a response to the sometimes dystopian future-present landscape of Los Angeles, melding classic 70's riffs and song structures with 2019 perspective. Think laurel canyon meets DTLA, palm tress and high-rises - a portrait of the city's renaissance with one eye on it's past and the other on the emergency exit.

Jesse Ruben Owen Danoff - Rockwood Music Hall
February 15, 2020 - New York

21+The message that Brooklyn singer/songwriter Jesse Ruben has been spreading through his music is simple and direct. I can. You can. We Can. When Jesse originally wrote his song "We Can", he had just run the NYC Marathon and hoped to inspire people to start running. As it turns out, his message was meant to be much more universal. A few months after he released the track, a Vancouver elementary school reached out, saying they had been playing it to inspire their students. They asked Jesse to fly in and perform the song for their school, and so began "The We Can Project", which now spreads across North America. Jesse began touring the country, visiting schools and helping students come up with personal goals and ways to give back to their community. Amazing things began to happen. Playgrounds were built. Gardens planted. Cancer walks organized.

Motel Radio - The Mercury Lounge
February 16, 2020 - New York

16 and OverHarmony is king in Motel Radio. The four piece, dual front man indie band from New Orleans builds silky, melodic guitar waves for their stacked vocals to surf across. Breezy yet intentional, pop-minded yet psychedelic; their tunes are as likely to stick with young songwriters as they are veteran deadheads. In New Orleans, music wafts through the windows night and day. From the sidesticking second lines to the croons of the troubadours on Royal Street, Motel Radio draws inspiration from the sounds of their home city while adding their own indie flair to the pot. The group spent the past year writing and recording their debut full-length Siesta Del Sol with producer, engineer, and neighbor Eric Heigle.

February 16, 2020 - New York

Musical Salute To The Soulful Ladies of the 90's Mary J. Blige,Janet Jackson & Toni BraxtonFeat. Emilie SurteesFor a singer with such powerful pipes, it's something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a "listener." Then again, maybe it's her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives herMusical Salute To The Soulful Ladies of the 90's Mary J. Blige,Janet Jackson & Toni Braxtonits amazing accuracy. Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors in this concert at The Legendary Cafe Wha?.
