Camp Lawless - Writing Workshop - Bowery Poetry Club
August 18, 2019 - New York

At Camp Lawless, your primary goal is to develop new poems: a quantity of your own original writing. And like any Summer Camp, you will emerge as a somewhat unrecognizable but more experienced form of yourself. Our generative format will allow you to develop your voices, write voluminously, journal (yes, you may write home!), and scare yourself. This class will be playful, harness the fun of summer sun and Sundays, but it will also be hard work! We will study non-traditional forms, collaboration, ekphrastic writing, elegy, using the self, hybrid, anti-poems, found, nature, formal, conceptual, dreams, the internet, and more. Class time will be spent on active writing, workshops, experiencing, listening to and responding to visitors, a little editing, and you will also practice performing your new work! We will be visited by amazing working poets (TBA), read poetry, words, and letters from the past and present. And since it's SUMMER, we will take a writing excursion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as to the sidewalks, parks, and even the New York City Poetry Festival for inspiration and writing.

Olivia Gatwood poignantly deconstructs the dark side of girlhood, violence against women, and society's obsession with true crime in this dazzling debut collection of raw and explosive poems. LIFE OF THE PARTY is as beautiful in its prose as it is powerfully ... (read more)

Dap's Den - Williamsburg Music Center
Through August 20, 2019 - Brooklyn

Jazz has a long history of being nurtured and developed in Harlem. The creativity, energy, and freedom of ideas created and exhibited there have been nothing short of legendary. Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, and Arthur Taylor (to name just a few) all credit this hallowed ground as an integral part of their success. Few embody this spirit more than Daniel “Dapper Dan” Day. Dapper Dan is a Harlem street-based pioneer who operated a boutique in the 80s known for his defiant appropriations of European heritage brands. While it took him over 30 years to be recognized for his innovations in fashion, today Dapper Dan enjoys a partnership with Gucci— one of the very brands that helped force him out of business over 20 years ago. What’s more jazz than that? Dan’s dream of having a night club never came to fruition, so in true Dapper Dan style, we’re borrowing his heritage brand to bring Harlem to Williamsburg. Welcome to Dap’s Den! Performances By: Raina Sokolov -Gonzalez, Matt Martinez and Andrew Latona, Aida Johannes and Jackson Miller

Mapping the City with the Body - Pioneer Works
August 24, 2019 - Brooklyn

Our bodies help us recognize, understand, navigate, and even create the urban space. Traces of bodies in space, like the blue dot on Google Maps, provide us with clues about our own movement, metaphors that we use to talk about the city and its systems, and even measurement units. At the same time, cities can have a particularly interesting effect in bodies' self-awareness and their interactions with the environment, other bodies, and themselves (i.e. sidewalks, elevators, benches in public spaces, workspaces, supermarkets, and spaces for prayer and meditation). If we use our bodies as mapping tools, how does it transform our knowledge and experience? In this workshop, led by Vanessa Vargas and Nelesi Rodriguez, we will use cartography as a framework to explore corporeal and social practices. This event will take place off-site at Governors Island, Nolan Park 8B, which is accessible via ferry from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Tainted Love 80's Dance Party - The Bell House
August 24, 2019 - Brooklyn

Ages 21+ Soft Cell's pioneering 1981 cover of the Northern Soul classic, "Tainted Love," is the inspiration for this awesome 80s dance party. Building on a solid foundation of New Wave, we'll dig deeper into the catalog of massive hits and overlooked misses from the late 70s through the early 90s - pivotal years in musical history that blurred the lines between Analog and Digital, Disco and Synthpop, Funk and Hip-Hop. A time when Alternative was called Post-Punk, Indie actually meant independent, and Throbbing Gristle's "Hot on the Heels of Love" surely could have been alongside Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on the charts...with today's perspective. Other passions include CBGB-era New York, Batcave-era London - Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Kraut Rock, Girl Rock, Dad Rock, Rockabilly, Ska, Machine Soul, Blue-Eyed Soul, Darkwave, Coldwave - plus some guilty pleasures in the (strictly) Old-School Rap department.

Learn about Hudson River Park's wildlife by joining knowledgeable naturalists on guided nature walks throughout the summer along the Park's esplanade. Each nature walk is unique and offers a one-of-a-kind treasure hunt-like experience. Park Naturalists will meet participants at the Christopher Street Fountain, just north of Pier 40 at 9 a.m. sharp. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Loud noises and barking tend to startle wildlife and reduce viewing opportunities - please be considerate and leave your dog at home.
