Bla Fleck and the Flecktones - The Town Hall
December 04, 2019 - New York

Groundbreaking banjoist / composer / bandleader Bla Fleck has reconvened the original 'Bla Fleck & The Flecktones', the extraordinary initial line-up of his incredible combo. Rocket Science marks the first recording by the first fab four Flecktones in almost two decades, with pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten, and percussionist/ Drumitarist Roy "Futureman" Wooten. Far from being a wistful trip back in time, the album sees the Grammy Award-winning quartet creating some of the most forward thinking music of their long, storied career. While all manners of genres come into play from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones, the music made only when these four individuals come together.

This workshop will introduce students to the yogic tradition of chanting in a group setting, called Kirtan.During a Kirtan we chant ancient Sanskrit mantras in a repetitive call and response manner. As we flood the space with our voices the vibration that is produced has the very powerful ability to calm the mind, open the heart and release fear and tension from the body. It can serve as a purifying and up-lifting experience and offers the benefits of a yoga class or meditation, without the struggle of concentration.

Their first full - length release saw the band staying true to their frenetic roots, but dialed down to a m... (read more)

20/20 Insight: Posters from the 2017 Women's March - Poster House
Through January 05, 2020 - New York,

The Women's March held on January 21, 2017, in cities across the United States brought together people of all types for a demonstration in response to the election of President Donald J. Trump.Taking to the streets, protesters made posters addressing issues of immigration, environmentalism, and civil rights that tapped into an apprehension about the future of democracy in the United States and, in particular, the treatment of women. The 2017 Women's March was a highwater mark of participation in recent memory, but it follows a tradition of protests and persistent action in the quest for equal rights. Equally enduring are the graphics and poster images that have carried through generations of marches, rallies, and grassroots action. Today's demonstrators arm themselves with symbols from poster history, borrowing the power of their ideology while crafting new meaning. 20/20 Insight looks at the 2017 Women's March within this larger context to understand what has come before and to encourage participation in the future of this democracy.
