While sipping on your now "legal" alcoholic beverage you will hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated into society. Late Night Packet Jam - UCBT Hell's Kitchen
May 29, 2019 - New York

Late Night Packet Jam is the showcase for new & weird bits from New York's top late night writers, hosted by UCB's Night Late team. These submitted monologue jokes, desk bits, games, walk-on characters, and weirdo experimental ideas all get their moment in front of late night's best audience. If it's going in a late night packet tomorrow (or eventually), it'll be at Late Night Packet Jam. Guidelines If interested in submitting, send a script of your bit (or monologue jokes) to [email protected] by midnight one week before showtime. Your bit must be written (no improv), under five minutes, and have zero (or ultra-simple!) tech queues. Except for monologue jokes, you're responsible for performing your bit. (If you'd like to read your monologue jokes yourself, let us know in the email) If you miss the deadline, at the show you can drop your idea in the Last Chance Bucket, where one randomly-chosen bit is selected and performed with very little preparation! LNPJ submissions are open to all and you may submit more than one bit.

Book Launch: We've Got People by Ryan Grim - POWERHOUSE Arena
May 29, 2019 - New York

We've Got People: From Jesse Jackson to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the End of Big Money and the Rise of a Movement is the first book-length treatment of the roots and rise of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, tracing the movement that propelled her back to the 1988 presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition — a year before she was born. That campaign stunned the Democratic Party by coming within inches of winning the nomination. One of the few white progressives to endorse the campaign early was Burlington Mayor Bernie Sanders; Ocasio-Cortez, in 2016, would volunteer for his presidential campaign. Veterans of the Sanders campaign then formed the organization that recruited Ocasio-Cortez to run for Congress, and backed her and her squad to the hilt. At every step, the movement was in conflict with the centrist wing of the party, and the book, jam-packed with new revelations, explores how each shaped each other, and how that 30-year war shapes the fight playing out today

Become a Citizen Pruner - Green-Wood Cemetery
May 29, 2019 - Brooklyn

Stewardship and pruning hugely reduce a tree's vulnerability to common urban threats such as pedestrian and vehicular traffic, drought and storms. In New York City, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need, Citizen Pruners provides a great asset to our urban environment. Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC's street trees. Green-Wood's own neighborhood, Sunset Park, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They're nature's miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff, provide oxygen, fight climate change, and lower air temperatures.

Scientific Controversies No. 18: Event Horizon - Pioneer Works
May 29, 2019 - Brooklyn

Black holes could have been relegated to mathematics and remained a physical absurdity. They were the outcome of a thought experiment, a fantastical imagining. Imagine matter crushed to a point. Don't ask how. Just imagine that. But nature thought of a way to make them by killing off massive stars. These dead stars collapse under their own weight so catastrophically that even light gets dragged down the hole, casting a shadow on the sky. That shadow is the event horizon, left behind while the stellar material continues to fall to an unknown fate. For the first time in human history, we have seen a black hole. The image was captured by Event Horizon Telescope, a composite telescope the size of the whole Earth.

Please join Bayside Historical Society and honored guests at Dermody Triangle, the site of one of NYC’s oldest war memorials, as we lay a wreath to honor the memory of Baysider Captain William C. Dermody and all those who bravely fought in the Civil War. Captain William C. To this effect, a monument was placed in the square with the inscription “For a Better Union 1861-1865,” which remains there today. Representatives from Company K, 67th New York Infantry, will attend the ceremony on May 30th in period-correct Civil War uniforms and include an honor guard carrying a reproduction of their Regimental Flag and drummer... In 1920, the United States enforced the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned liquor production, public consumption and the selling of anything alcoholic. This catapulted the criminal world and helped the mob monopolize and grow their illegal business of alcohol. It made some of the most vicious gangsters gain fame and fortune. Illegal bars known as speakeasies opened by the thousands and served bootleg liquor to a thirsty public. On this tour, you will walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. There you can sip a craft cocktail served by some of the top bartenders in New York City. While sipping on your now "legal" alcoholic beverage you will hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated into society. At the end of the tour you will be a "wiseguy" about Prohibition and the Italian mob. Further, you will stop in for some of the best pizza in all of New York City. The tour kicks off at Lt. Petrosino Square.

Sarah Zapata makes work with labor-intensive processes such as handweaving, rope coiling, latch hooking, and sewing by intersecting theories of gender and ethnicity with pre-colonial histories and techniques. Making work with meditative, mechanical means, her current work deals with the multiple facets of her complex identity: a Texan living in Brooklyn, a lesbian raised as an evangelical Christian, a first generation American of Latin American descent, a contemporary artist inspired by ancient civilizations, an artist challenging the history of craft as "women's work" within the realm of art. Zapata's work has been exhibited at the New Museum (NY), El Museo del Barrio (NY), Museum of Art and Design (NY), Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art (NY), Boston University (MA), LAXART (CA), Deli Gallery (NY), Arsenal Contemporary (NY), and Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center (NY). Zapata has also completed recent residencies at MASS MoCA (MA), A-Z West (CA), and Wave Hill (NY), and is the recent recipient of an NFA Project Grant from the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. Zapata was an artist-in-residence at the Museum of Arts and Design in 2016.

Step into one of the oldest bars in New York City where the legendary illusionist Harry Houdini still performs tricks. Check out the hotel that was built right next to a cemetery! And, of course, it wouldn't be an East Village gangster ghost tour without meeting the famous 17th century leader of New Amsterdam at his farm house, Peg Leg Pete. Part gangster, part ghost, pure fun. All this and more on this spirited pub crawl departing from New York's St. Mark's Church-on-the-Bowery.

Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl - Lt. Petrosino Square
June 02, 2019 - New York
