Deeds Not Words - The Tank
February 09, 2019 - New York

As voting rights are being gutted and a women's right to choose is on its most unsteady footing in a generation, ETC. presents this evening of shockingly relevant Women's Suffrage Era satires. In the Pro-Suffrage How the Vote Was Won, working class Horace's world is turned upside-down when a household of lady-relatives arrive, demanding to be "supported". Only when he is confronted with the idea of a future without women in the workforce does this anti-suffrage stalwart realizes the error of his ways. The Spirit of Seventy-Six; or, The Coming Woman, was written as anti-suffrage propaganda in the years after the Civil War, as the women's suffrage movement was gaining speed. It tells the "horrifying" prophecy of a future of female dominance, played for delicious irony. These plays are two hilarious examples of how theater can be used as effective tools to fight against encroaching civil rights violations.

Disassembler, Maria Antelman - Pioneer Works
Through February 10, 2019 - Brooklyn

In Disassembler, Maria Antelman presents eight installation works across three floors of the Pioneer Works building. Antelman creates collage-like videos that pull from a well of sources, including scenarios about rewilding the American West, ideas of techno-animism, and early reconnaissance images from outer space. Crafted from unexpected juxtapositions, her often foreboding filmic compositions decode what it means to exist in a networks system. In the third floor gallery, Antelman will debut the namesake video installation Disassembler, newly commissioned by Pioneer Works and co-produced by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST). Titled after a computer tool that translates machine code into assembly language for humans to understand, the piece raises questions about the physical and psychological impact of automation processes on the individual and society. Disassembler confronts a post-automated experience, where bodies and gestures return to an organic, experiential world.

Through February 16, 2019 - New York

Opening at Dia:Chelsea on September 15, 2018, Blinky Palermo's To the People of New York City returns to New York City after thirty years. The artist's magnum opus was last shown in the city at Dia Center for the Arts, 548 West 22nd Street, in 1987. To the People of New York City is a multipartite group of paintings whose palette is derived from the colors of the German flag and titled, posthumously, from a dedication that Palermo inscribed on the backs of the metal panels. The work is part of the artist's Metal Pictures series (or Metallbilder, in German), which he started while in New York City from 1973 to 1976. During this time, Palermo began to compose serialized groups of paintings on metal, using color and formal patterns to focus on a specific experience of abstract progression. Completed upon his return to Düsseldorf in late 1976, To the People of New York City was discovered in Palermo's studio after his death in February 1977. Consisting of fifteen parts—composed from forty painted aluminum panels arranged in various combinations of black, cadmium red, and cadmium yellow—the demarcated bands of color in To the People of New York City read as striking, didactic sign...
