Concertgoers with additional questions should call CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800. There's melody, melancholy, and perhaps a touch of madness in the two late Schubert sonatas framing a gentle early work. The Sonata in A Minor, likely written when the composer learned of the gravity of his venereal disease, is a dark-hued journey from its disconsolate opening to jittery finale. The Sonata in A Major flows with some of Schubert's most fetching melodies, but the rampaging scales, trills, and clusters that interrupt a tender second-movement theme suggest nightmare or hallucination—perhaps Schubert's cry of misery from the effects of disease.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is one of Europe's foremost contemporary big bands. Founder and director Tommy Smith established the SNJO in 1995 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting jazz as a pre-eminent art form through performances, original compositions, recordings, and educational outreach. The SNJO has shared the stage with renowned jazz artists such as Bill Evans, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Gary Burton, Bobby Watson, Dave Liebman, Kurt Elling, Kenny Wheeler, Makoto Ozone, and more. Tonight, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra invites you to enjoy new swinging big-band jazz interpretations of Prokofiev's popular classical work, Peter & the Wolf. The SNJO will be joined by leading Scots actor Tam Dean Burn to create a wildly vivid jazz version of Prokofiev's famous cautionary fable. Combining virtuosity and ingenuity with striking theatricality, it's a delightful collision between a folk tale and big-band swing with the music woven around expressive dialogue adapted by former Scots Makar (National Poet of Scotland) Liz Lochhead. Though full of fresh ideas, Smith's orchestration remains true to the composer's much-loved musical characterizations... (read more)

Felipe Esparza - Carolines on Broadway
June 20, 2019 - New York

Comedian and actor Felipe Esparza got his start as a comedian all because someone asked him to list 5 goals in life. During a stint in rehab before he was 21, Felipe was asked what he wanted out of life. As a young immigrant growing up in the projects in Boyle Heights (East L.A.) and then as a teenage father with a drug and alcohol problem, it was a difficult task because he had never thought that far ahead. Among the items on that list, "to be happy", and "be a stand-up comedian" - because of how he connected to an old Bill Cosby album when he was younger. Up until that question, Felipe was under the impression that life was over at 18. If you had told him back then that all this life experience would one day make people laugh, he wouldn't have believed it. From being raised in the projects in a family of 9 living in the most gang-infested neighborhood in the country to winning NBC's "Last Comic Standing", to selling out live comedy shows all over the country and being able to act in TV shows and movies, Felipe's life has been anything but boring. After the 16-year "overnight success" of winning Last Comic Standing, Felipe went on to produce his first hour long stand-up comedy s... (read more)

It is an amazing world, complex at times, but always inviting. It reflects the rich colors of the jazz idiom as well as Park's personal connection with 19th century classical piano music and Korean folk music concepts. Park has developed her trio into a true extension of her own voice. Musical ideas flow seamlessly between the members of the band. The versatile drumming of Peter Traunmueller, the melodic bass playing of Myles Sloniker, and the captivating, virtuosic quality of her own performance is always in function of the greater musical goal.

Through June 22, 2019 - New York

Comedian and actor Felipe Esparza got his start as a comedian all because someone asked him to list 5 goals in life. Barrie is an adult companion piece to his Peter Pan and provides our characters the magical do-over they yearn for. Just like that, thanks to a magic wood, lives are altered; fate reversed. But alas, the grass isn’t always greener.
