Center for Contemporary Opera Presents: Scare Pair: Usher House/Canterville Ghost - The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College
October 19, 2017 - New York

SCARE PAIR by Gordon Getty Ready for a spooky night out? The Kaye Playhouse transforms into two different haunted houses in a double bill of operas by Gordon Getty. Writer Edgar Allen Poe takes the stage himself as the main character of Usher House, an unsettling chiller that has all the classic elements of Gothic horror: a high-strung recluse, a beautiful madwoman and a sinister doctor, all hidden away in a crumbling manor house full of secrets. The Canterville Ghost puts a deft comic spin on Oscar Wilde's witty tale, in which the 300-year-old ghost of an English nobleman fails to impress his newest audience, a family of Americans who simply refuse to be frightened. CAST Edgar Allen Poe / Duke Cecil of Cheshire - Dominic Armstrong Roderick Usher / Hiram Otis - Keith Phares Madeline Usher / Virginia Otis - Summer Hassan Dr. Primus / Sir Simon, the Ghost - Matthew Burns Attendant / Lord Canterville - Kevin Wetzel Mrs. Otis - Jessica Ann Best Child Madeline / First Otis Twin - Hilary Ginther Child Roderick / Second Otis Twin - Augusta Caso Madeline Usher (dancer) - Jamielyn Duggan Mrs. Umney - Mary Claire Curran Barbara - Phoebe Haines Richard - Aaron Theno CREAT... Spirit of the Seaport: A Victorian Haunting Aboard the Wavertree - Seaport Musem New York
October 20, 2017 - New York

Join the Seaport Museum as you get ready for Halloween at this spectacular event, an eerie Victorian social soirée aboard the 1885 sailing ship Wavertree and a guided tour that will reveal the grisly secrets of Schermerhorn Row. As you board Wavertree you will enjoy a champagne welcome, and then take a step into the late Victorian period, when people were drawn towards the paranormal, supernatural, and occult. Aboard this storied 19th-century vessel you will meet magicians, mentalists, and tarot readers while listening to a live band perform jazz and ragtime music of the late 19th-century and sipping on signature Seaport cocktails, beer, and wine. The evening's highlight will be the chance to witness an authentic recreation of a Victorian séance in the spooky captain's saloon. An exclusive addition to this devilish night is the opportunity to explore Schermerhorn Row, one of the oldest warehouses of New York City and home of the Seaport Museum. On this candlelit guided tour through a preserved piece of the past, including the remains of a 19th-century hotel, guests will hear the terrifying stories of the gruesome deaths that took place there over a hundred years ago. At... (read more)

Five Dolls for an August Moon - Nitehawk Cinema
October 23, 2017 - Brooklyn

Director: Mario Bava Starring: Edith Meloni, Edwige Fenech, Ely Galleani, Helena Ronee, Ira von Fürstenberg, Maurice Poli, Mauro Bosco, Teodoro Corrà, William Berger FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON is Mario Bava's deliriously mod spin on an Agatha Christie-style whodunit. Bava was so closely associated with the horror genre that this twisting mystery was never released theatrically in the U.S., but it is deliciously entertaining all the same. A space age island retreat is visited by a group of friends and business associates, one of whom is a scientist who has invented a revolutionary chemical process, and is fending off various offers to buy it. Soon the vacationers start dying, and the survivors begin to wonder who has the most to gain from these murders most foul. Anything but a drawing room mystery, Bava's erotic thriller is enlivened by its psychedelic set design, a hip score by Piero Umiliani, and a swinging performance by giallo goddess Edwige Fenech (All the Colors of the Dark).

The Masquerade Ball : a Sexy Venetian Carnival Affair - Stage 48
Through October 28, 2017 - New York

What Happens Behind the Mask….Stays Behind the Mask. One of the most popular NYC Halloween events is the debaucherous Venetian Masquerade Ball, in the spirit of Stanley Kubrick's "EYES WIDE SHUT" film w/ Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman (PG-13 for this event, of course). Due to the tremendous success of last years event, the famous "MASQUERADE BALL: A Venetian Carnival Affair" returns this year better than ever at NYC's Biggest Event Space STAGE48. Back in 1292, the original purpose of the Carnival of Venice was to serve as an excuse for people of different social classes to mingle and indulge in behaviors that might be otherwise deemed questionable, if not downright salacious. The custom of wearing masks developed to protect the identity of the Carnival participants and empowering them anonymous freedom to partake in their most intimate of fantasies and desires. The point of THE MASQUERADE BALL is to provide a sexy evening of 'mystique' & 'playfulness' for you and your friends to experience the freedom of anonymity behind the mask, leaving your inhibitions behind, and setting your wildest fantasies free. So get in the playful, adventurous Venetian spirit and prepare for what is... (read more)

In the past decade, Galas has continued to tour worldwide, presenting the work of living and dead poets who were imprisoned, exiled, or assassinated from/by their own countries and poets who lived in fear for their lives for real or perceived political/moral dissidence: César Vallejo, Ali Ahmad Said Asbar, Cesare Pavese, Constantine Cavafy, Miguel Huezo Mixco, Jose-Maria Cuellar, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and many others. After years of lending her music to the films of directors such as Francis Ford, Oliver Stone, Wes Craven, Clive Barker, Derek Jarman, Hideo Nakata, Mercedes Moncada and others, in 2011 Galás collaborated with filmmaker Davide Pepe to create the experimental sound and film work, Schrei 27.
