Astronomy on Tap’s 10th Anniversary Party
Celebrate Astronomy on Tap’s 10th Anniversary with space, science, games, prizes, music, and of course beer! Astronomy on Tap NYC presents an evening of fun presentations by scientists, the history of Astronomy on Tap in song, and lots more accessible, engaging edu-tainment. Interspersed throughout the evening will be numerous ways for audience members to win prizes – through trivia, audience participation games, and raffles.
Four astronomically-named tiers of tickets are available: Planet, Star, Galaxy, and Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, with higher tiers providing more chances to win epic raffle prizes valued at over $1000 in total, including an overabundance of Neil Tyson’s Treasures, swag bags, and having your name announced on stage at the event! Proceeds from ticket sales will cover the cost of this very special venue, compensate our performers, and provide funding for future AoT events. Prizes and swag are mostly astronomy related and will include: astronomically themed clothing, jewelry and decor furnished by STARtorialist; humorous astronomy-related gag gifts; official stickers and swag from NASA missions, observatories, and other professional organizations; historical Astronomy on Tap items; and other prizes with direct and tangential relationships to the wide world of astronomy. By the end of the night, everyone in the audience should have something to take home! Presenters include Astronomer Dr. Jackie Faherty (AMNH) and Professor Emily Rice (CUNY/AMNH), along with Brian Levine (CUNY), Mark Popinchalk (CUNY/AMNH), Afra Ashraf (Columbia), and Kaitlin Schmidt (AMNH). Joining us will be special guest Andy Heidel, author of the Cocktail Guide to the Galaxy, and former founder and proprietor of the Way Station, venue for AoT NYC . ASTRONOMY ON TAP (AoT) was brought to NYC in 2013 by astronomer Emily Rice and collaborators. AoT events are defined by scientists, educators, artists, and other astronomy-enthusiasts presenting real science in fun and engaging ways, connecting with the audience in new and novel ways. Presenters are encouraged to use humor and interactive elements, and audiences are encouraged to engage their brains, ask questions, and learn about space while socializing with friends and scientists. With a team including professional astronomers and educators, AoT NYC has produced over 100 events in and around New York City at the Way Station, as part of our current monthly series at Pete’s Candy Store, plus events at a variety of bars, the New York Public Library, the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, the Brooklyn Public Library, Pioneer Works, the Cradle of Aviation, and as part of the World Science Festival, the Taste of Science and Pint of Science festivals, and STEM Fest at Frigid NYC. The event format has also expanded to over 80 cities and nearly 2,000 events around the world in the past ten years. It turns out that indeed: science is even better with beer.
Astronomy On Tap’s 10th Anniversary will be presented on April 12th at DROM in Manhattan (85 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009, dromnyc.com). Doors open at 7 pm, the event starts at 7:30 pm. Tickets start at $10, and are available online at https://dromnyc.com/event/astronomy-on-tap/.
