Alison Underwood Exhibition Opening: "The impossibility of never"
Landing Contemporary Art X FORM + FLOW Opening Reception, Thursday, February 27 6:30 - 9pm Alison Underwood The impossibility of never
“The nature of desire is to be unsatisfied. The liminal space between wanting and having has always been irresistible. I have been slowly developing a visual vocabulary to examine the psychology of desire and the choices one makes in order to satisfy or defer it.” - Alison Underwood
We are pleased to present the exhibition The impossibility of never (February 27 - May 27, 2020), featuring the work of emerging 2D mixed media artist Alison Underwood.
Working across many practices, including painting, printmaking, collage, and digital, Underwood manifests a fascination with desire, dreams, and longing through the integration of richly layered symbolism in her work. Hyperreal hair, ropes, disembodied limbs, fabric, plants, portals, and flat geometries figure prominently, threading a path between the real and the mystical that is rendered more sublime by the lack of solid ground represented. These seemingly disparate elements create an aura of unrequited passion; a longing for something that transcends this world.
The exhibition takes its title from a painting in the show, setting the tone for a metaphysical experience with the work. When life presents seemingly insurmountable challenges, the phrase, “The impossibility of never” is a reminder that there are always exceptions to the rule; that never itself does not exist. This notion makes room for the unintended, as Underwood does in her work.
The impossibility of never is a collaboration between Landing Contemporary Art and Form + Flow, founded by Kristie Landing and Shelly Yang, respectively, who met while studying in the MA Contemporary Art program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. Both organizations strive to represent and support talented contemporary emerging artists. In the context of Form + Flow, the exhibition sets a dreamy mise-en-scène for the practice of yoga, sound bathing, and performance art.
Alison Underwood (b. 1992, Kentucky) grew up in a small town in rural Kentucky. She holds a B.A. in Studio Art from The University of Louisville and an M.A. in History of Design and Curatorial Studies from Parsons/Cooper Hewitt.
