Language is a Temptation: Poet and Educator J’Lyn Chapman Reads July 5 From Bernadette Mayer’s Memory
Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
Poets House will present a reading of July 5 from Bernadette Mayer’s Memory by poet and educator J’Lyn Chapman on Sunday, July 5th at 3:00 PM EST. The reading will be available on the Poets House Instagram page, YouTube channel, and website. This upcoming reading is part of the Language is a Temptation series of daily readings throughout the month of July.
J’Lyn Chapman serves as an Assistant Professor in the Jack Kerouac School at Naropa University. Her book Beastlife was published by Calamari Archive in 2016. Her most recent work is To Limn / Lying In (PANK Books, 2020). She has also published the chapbooks A Thing of Shreds and Patches (Essay Press, 2016) and The Form Our Curiosity Takes (Essay Press, 2015), both of which can be found online.
In July 1971, Bernadette Mayer embarked on a month-long experiment: every day she exposed a roll of 35mm film and kept a journal. The result was a groundbreaking, conceptual work, comprised of more than 1100 photographs and two hundred pages of text. Mayer’s durational and constraint-based diaristic work of poetry and photography investigates the nature of memory: its surfaces, textures and material.
Throughout July, Poets House and Siglio Press will embark on a month long daily experiment: a passage from the corresponding day in 1971 will be read by poets, writers, critics, and artists, as a parallel durational work that celebrates the new publication of Bernadette Mayer’s Memory, which brings together the full sequence of images and text for the first time in book form.
Founded by two-time U.S. Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz and legendary arts administrator Elizabeth Kray, Poets House serves as a home for all who read and write poetry. In 2009, Poets House moved into its permanent home at 10 River Terrace in Battery Park City on the banks of the Hudson River where, last year, 80,000 people walked through its doors, and more than five million were introduced to Poets House through its new website and national partnerships. 2017 marks the 30th Anniversary Celebration of this landmark institution.
