Ruth Whaley The Silent Land March 2 – March 16, 2023 Opening Reception 5pm to 8pm March 2, 2023 Studio 9D, 508 West 26th Street NYC, NY 10001

In “The Silent Land”, Ruth Whaley’s second solo exhibition in New York, her new work reminds us that everything has a finite life span. She presents images of impermanence, innocence, and transformation evoking the ephemeral nature of the world and of time. She paints flowers not to keep them alive, but to celebrate the darkness from which they emerge and eventually return.

Influenced by artists such as Giorgione, Gerhard Richter and Antonio Lopez Garcia, Whaley’s compositions are dreamlike, sentimentally rooted in an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. She often uses imagery drawn from family conversations, photographs and letters. Low resolution, pre-digital, black and white or sepia photographs become the sources of inspiration with varying degrees of realism. Beyond the quietness of their appearance, each image evokes layers of movement through time.

Born in London, Whaley grew up in England and Germany and moved to the United States after graduating from the University of Cambridge. She completed a Ph.D. at Harvard on the subject of landscapes in 19th century literature before starting a professional career in finance. She studied painting at the New York Academy of Art, completing her Certificate of Fine Art in 2016 and her MFA in 2018. Whaley lives and works in New York City with a focus on internal landscapes that play and replay with the vagaries of shifting memory.
