World Inferno Friendship Society - Monty Hall
June 21, 2019 - Jersey City

World/Inferno Friendship Society bring their high energy excitement to the intimate Monty Hall. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity! The World/Inferno Friendship Society (also referred to as "World Inferno", or "Inferno") is a band from Brooklyn, New York. Its style merges punk, soul, klezmer and jazz, while its collective membership features horns, piano and guitar and has a membership of about 40 players, of whom only about seven to ten active members usually perform at a time. The group is led by singer Jack Terricloth, who has been the only constant during the group's history. Terricloth is known for his pointed commentary during shows; his monologues have touched on politics and his transformation from the "old school". Its lyrics often concern historical or biographical subjects, such as Weimar-era Germany, Peter Lorre, Jeffrey Lee Pierce of The Gun Club, Paul Robeson, Leni Riefenstahl, Dante Alighieri, Philip K. Dick, and Jonathan Fire*Eater. Black Wail has been pushing the boundaries of blues, psychedelia and doom since its emergence from the chromium swamps of Jersey City in early 2014.

Harlem Jazz Series - Carla Cook Quartet - Greater Calvary Baptist Church
June 21, 2019 - New York

Carla Cook is daring. She is a jazz singer/songwriter who sings standards beautifully - but she doesn't stop there. Cook is willing to put a jazz spin on songs not written by traditional jazz composers. Songs that, until you hear her sing them, you'd never imagine could be interpreted as jazz. This native Detroiter, who grew up in a musically rich and diverse environment, brings all her influences to bear within her repertoire. In her songbook you'll find elements of R&B, European classical, Motown, Blues and Gospel. Cook has always eschewed labels, and refuses to become a jazz purist or snob. That willingness to simply sing what she loves, bringing an earthy sophistication to every song, is what gives Cook her signature style. In 1999, Cook recorded her debut album; It's All About Love. The CD enjoyed favorable reviews and received a Grammy nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance category and was awarded the AFIM Indie Award for Best Jazz Vocal in 2000. In 2000, Cook recorded her second album, Dem Bones and in 2002, she recorded Simply Natural, both for MAXJAZZ. Her albums continue to receive critical acclaim. Featuring: Carla Cook - vocalist First set: 7pm - 7:45pm; 1... (read more)

Third album Portrait arrived on De Stijl in 2011, sporting a much clearer recording quality, as well as a dirge-like deconstruction of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" recorded live. Fohr graduated college in 2012, and moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Chicago, where she began collaborating and performing with several artists in the city's vast music communities.
