"Mingus packed his music so full of life, so full of the noise of the city, that thirty years in the future someone listening to 'Pithecanthropus Erectus' or 'Hog Calling Blues' or any of those other wild steamrolling things wouldn't be sure whether that wail and scream was a horn on the record or the red-and-white siren of a prowl car shrieking past the window. Just listening to the music would be a way of joining in with it, adding to it." (From But Beautiful: A Book About Jazzby Geoff Dyer)

#StarringJohnCho Exhibition - Pearl River Mart Gallery
Through July 08, 2019 - New York

It’s not just a hashtag — it’s a cultural movement. Screenwriter, creative strategist, and cultural activist William Yu started the viral #StarringJohnCho project to address the lack of Asian American representation in Hollywood and to bring to life the idea of an Asian American leading actor. Now the hashtag is brought to life in a multimedia installation. Reminiscent of a movie theater lobby, the installation invites viewers to the imagined world of John Cho as a lead actor, and makes tangible the possibilities for a new kind of movie going experience for Asian Americans. See in person what movies like The Avengers, Jurassic World, and (500) Days of Summer would look like with an Asian American star. And, become a superhero yourself with the show's interactive portion! Join us in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month for the opening reception: May 18, 5 to 7pm. Free and open to the public.

Therefore , her solution is to give young, good looking, yet hilarious comics stage time in the hopes that it will win them over. Everyone is up and arms that this is so scandalous. If that’s not enough of a back story to get you off of your iPhone and to the club then what is. Who ever told you that good looking people aren... (read more)

Allan Harris: A Tale of Two Kings - Dizzy's Club

With vocalist Allan Harris, drummer/cajon player Shirazette Tinnin, pianist Arcoiris Sandoval, and bassist Nimrod Speaks. "…the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat King Cole." – The Miami Herald "Although he's best known for his buttery tributes to Nat "King" Cole and Billy Eckstine, [Allan] Harris ranks among the most dexterous singers around, and he proves fully up to the challenge" of "navigating the tricky, rapid-fire, street-smart wordplay of vocalese—an art form [Eddie] Jefferson is widely credited with creating." – JazzTimes The award-winning Allan Harris is a Brooklyn-born, Harlem-raised vocalist, guitarist, and composer with a powerful baritone voice and a huge stylistic range. In his return to Dizzy's Club, he will pay tribute to two geniuses of jazz vocals: vocalese pioneer Eddie Jefferson and crooner Nat "King" Cole. July 10, 2019 - New York

Many musicians would be content with being one of the most in–demand drummers on the scene today – but not Ulysses Owens Jr., who continues to burnish his credentials as a composer, bandleader, producer and educator. From his GRAMMY Award–winning performances with the Christian McBride Trio and Big Band to world tours with Kurt Elling and Joey Alexander, Owens has been a crucial participant in some of the most successful jazz ensembles of the 21st century. As a leader, he's released five albums including Songs of Freedom (2019) with vocal performances by Rene Marie, Alicia Olatuja, and Theo Bleckmann; and four more CDs with the New Century Jazz Quintet, the Japan–based group he co–leads with pianist Takeshi Ohbayashi. Owens is the creator of such ambitious works as Ulysses in 3, a multi-disciplinary performance piece based on James Joyce' Ulysses and presented in 2015 at the Park Avenue Armory Conservancy; and the seven–movement suite Stages of Us, commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art for the MoMA Summer Garden Series. "Generation Y" is an exciting new project from this gifted renaissance man of jazz; the ensemble includes rising–star saxophonist Alex... (read more)

All of us at Jazz Standard are delighted to welcome back five–time GRAMMY Award winner Billy Childs, a musician held in the highest esteem for his prodigious skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. July 12, 2019 - New York

Oliver Beer: Vessel Orchestra is the first sound-based installation commissioned by The Met. Hybrid by design, it is a musical instrument, a series of live performances, and an installation composed of thirty-two sculptures, utilitarian vessels, and decorative objects from the Museum collection. Selected for their natural pitches, which range from low C to high G on the chromatic musical scale, they form an arresting and unexpectedly versatile instrument, similar to an organ with multiple pipes. The Vessel Orchestra has two distinct modes. During Museum hours, a pre-programmed audio interface will play a new composition written by Beer, activating the vessels in real time—"player piano-style." On Friday evenings, the exhibition will feature a diverse group of guest artists who will perform new compositions and improvisations on this radical musical instrument in a series of intimate concerts.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Two Sigma: 'Starry Night' with Ethan Bolker - MoMath (National Museum of Mathematics)
July 12, 2019 - New York

Ancient Greek philosophers modeled the world with the four essences: earth, air, fire, and water. Plato then attached those to the cube, octahedron, tetrahedron, and icosahedron, thinking of the dodecahedron, the fifth regular polyhedron, as representing the universe. Centuries later Paolo Uccello, Johannes Kepler, and M. C. Escher explored a new type of dodecahedron built entirely from pentagrams (five-pointed stars) instead of pentagons. Join mathematician Ethan Bolker as we weave together history, art, math, and twelve five-pointed stars, creating your very own stellated dodecahedron to take home! Thanks to the generous support of Two Sigma, this program is free to attendees

In 1979, a new theater was born with a novel idea: give a second chance to American plays that are worthy of a second look. Second Stage Theater started in a cramped 100-seat space on the 16th floor of a hotel on the Upper West Side. That first production was far from an easy or auspicious launch – the director and three actors quit, one at the very last minute (luckily, a young actor named Jeff Daniels agreed to step in and perform).

July 14, 2019 - New York

All of us at Jazz Standard are delighted to welcome back five–time GRAMMY Award winner Billy Childs, a musician held in the highest esteem for his prodigious skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. In 1988, he launched his recording career as a leader with Take For Example, This...– the first of his four critically acclaimed albums for Windham Hill Jazz. For this much–anticipated engagement, Billy and band – including the exceptional vocalists Alicia Olatuja and Kate McGarry – will revisit the 2014 Sony Masterworks album Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. In his Rolling Stone review (9.9.2014), Dave DiMartino wrote: "This polished product, the work of jazz pianist Billy Childs, spotlights many of Nyro's best songs via Childs' creative orchestrations and the marvelous guest performers…Highly recommended." Billy Childs' latest album, Rebirth(Mack Avenue), marks "a return to the snaking quickfire hard–bop Childs played in the '70s, albeit infused with all the musics he has visited so intelligently since…It's ultra–s... Underscored live by Brooklyn-based DJ SunSon PDX and directed and choreographed by Adin Walker, THE WHITE DRESS features a music and movement score that accentuates Jonathan’s odyssey to be free in their own skin. This upcoming production comes after an acclaimed workshop production as part of the Araca Project, which was advocated for by influencers including Condola Rashad and Sara Ramirez. The project is divided into seven parts – adolescence, maternity and family, fun, work, eroticism, faith, and old age. Apart from the objective chronology of life's pilgrimage of a human being, or more precisely, of a woman, the photographs perceive the principal life values, which accompany and influence us during our entire existence. The theme is more or less general; thus the question is not to portray a particular environment or a characteristics of a certain country. One could say the woman portrayed is a „European" woman. A substantial part of the photograp... (read more)

An opening reception will be held on May 8, from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue including essays by Gloria Orenstein, Professor Emerita, Comparative Literature and Gender Studies, University of Southern California, and Patryk Tomaszewski, an art historian at The Graduate Center, CUNY. A Look Back: 50 Years After Stonewall - Fort Gansevoort
Through August 10, 2019 -

A Look Back: 50 Years After Stonewall unites the work of queer artists living and producing in and around New York City beginning around the time of the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and leading into the 1980s. This is only a portion of the story, an incomplete history, most especially given that the Gay Liberation movement and its coinciding contemporary art market had not placed transgender voices nor people of color at the forefront of the conversation. The exhibition includes both documentation of the Gay Liberation movement and a look back at the work made by LGBTQ+ artists during this time. Central to the work included are the subjects of protest, revolt, celebration, and love. Kate Millett's sculpture, American Flag Goes to Pot (1970) provides a blunt protest to government authority, while Joan E. Biren's photograph's document the tenderness of love between two women. The work made during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, beginning in 1981, becomes entangled in death and remembrance, an epidemic defining this decade most especially in the New York City queer community and resulting in a tremendous amount of loss. Peter Hujar, Paul Thek and David Wojnarowicz's work all refle... (read more)

Among Others: Photography and the Group - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among... (read more)

Walt Whitman: Bard of Democracy - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 15, 2019 - Manhattan

"Comrades! I am the bard of Democracy," Walt Whitman announced in a notebook in 1859. Over his 73 years (1819–1892), he essentially made good on that claim. From humble origins in Long Island and Brooklyn, he earned a global audience that never stops growing. On the two hundredth anniversary of his birth he continues to speak to new generations. The exhibition explores Whitman's process of self-invention, from his early years as a journalist, through the early 1850s when Whitman began to write more privately and poetically, to his final years. Whitman not only sounded a "barbaric yawp" over the rooftops of the world, but he also helped his country to reconcile its famous contradictions through his inclusivity and his extraordinary body of work. Several of Whitman's notebooks will be on display, as well as his portraitist's copy of Leaves of Grass (1855) and the famous letter written to Whitman by Ralph Waldo Emerson commending that book. The exhibition will establish Whitman's unblinking witness to the Civil War and display the great poems that he wrote in honor of the martyred president including "O Captain! My Captain!" Also on view are documents from Oscar Wilde, Hart Crane, Fe... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

E. v. Day: Breaking the Glass Ceiling - Children's Museum of the Arts
Through October 27, 2019 - New York

Known for her gravity-defying suspension sculptures that explore themes of science fiction, space, gender, and humor, E. V. Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity. The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia. Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

Picasso's Le Tricorne - New-York Historical Society
Through December 31, 2020 - Upper West Side

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
