Sunday Service Spring 2019 Season - Knockdown Center
April 14, 2019 - Maspeth

Sarah Zapata makes work with labor-intensive processes such as handweaving, rope coiling, latch hooking, and sewing by intersecting theories of gender and ethnicity with pre-colonial histories and techniques. Making work with meditative, mechanical means, her current work deals with the multiple facets of her complex identity: a Texan living in Brooklyn, a lesbian raised as an evangelical Christian, a first generation American of Latin American descent, a contemporary artist inspired by ancient civilizations, an artist challenging the history of craft as "women's work" within the realm of art. Zapata's work has been exhibited at the New Museum (NY), El Museo del Barrio (NY), Museum of Art and Design (NY), Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art (NY), Boston University (MA), LAXART (CA), Deli Gallery (NY), Arsenal Contemporary (NY), and Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center (NY). Zapata has also completed recent residencies at MASS MoCA (MA), A-Z West (CA), and Wave Hill (NY), and is the recent recipient of an NFA Project Grant from the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. The Cryptofuturist And The New Tribal Labyrinth - Pioneer Works
April 14, 2019 - Brooklyn

Pioneer Works presents the largest-scale exhibition of work by Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) in the United States. The centerpiece of The CryptoFuturist and The New Tribal Labyrinth is Blast Furnace (2013), a 40-foot-tall industrial structure resembling a steel maze of pipes, conveyor elevators, staircases and mezzanines. At the center of the work is a fictional narrative wherein a "New Tribe" of metal workers, inspired by a desire to the return to industry, take residence in the structure. This sets the stage for the synthesis of man and machine and refers to the replacement of heavy industry by an immaterial, information-led economy. In the shadow of Blast Furnace are sculptures from AVL's ongoing series, "Crypto-Futurism," which draws parallels between the Italian Futurists' nationalist glorification of new technologies, cities, and war during the 20th century, and emerging fascist tendencies today. The most prominent of these works, Pendulum Press (2019), an oversized mechanical clock powered by a swinging pendulum, crushes objects—in some instances, the artist's own work—at a pre-destined time daily. With these machines, AVL breaks with the past and ushers in a metaphorical new ... (read more)

Broods - Don't Feed the Pop Monster - Irving Plaza
April 18, 2019 - New york

The title to BROODS' new album may sound like a warning, but it's really a self-reminder. After years of attempting to artfully navigate the pop landscape, the New Zealand-bred duo decided to drop all pretense and get back to embracing their purest and strangest instincts—a process that's joyfully documented on Don't Feed the Pop Monster. "Our goal was to make songs that are true to us, without hiding behind any kind of façade," says Georgia Nott, who co-founded BROODS with her brother Caleb in 2013. "Instead of overthinking everything like, Is that too weird? or Does this make enough sense?, we made a point of just completely trusting in ourselves and trusting in each other.

Children of Bodom - Hexed - Irving Plaza
April 19, 2019 - New york

Children of Bodom Formed in Espoo, Finland in 1993 originally under the moniker Inearthed, CHILDREN OF BODOM had an extraordinary start to their career. Their '90s take off was so impressive that many new metal bands still look up to it today –almost all of their albums earned platinum or gold status in Finland and over the past twenty five years they've become regulars on some of the world's biggest stages. 2019 beckons in a new era for a revitalized and bloodthirsty Hate Crew, who will present their 10thstudio album Hexed on March 8th. It's been three years since the release of I Worship Chaos and Bodom have taken time out around touring to carefully develop this new work, which packs a hell of a punch. History tells us that having an extensive time frame to work on a project can often result in procrastination and loss of focus –but with Hexed the reverse has manifest in this 11 track, impressively stripped back melo-death, rock-n-roll-rampage. In an album packed full of killer tracks, 'Under Grass and Clover'-once more, a song blessed with melodies that evoke images of both '70s prog and '80s pop metal -has been picked out for extra attention by Alexi. "It's a track that peop... (read more)

Sonny & the Sunsets Kelley Stoltz - The Bell House
April 19, 2019 - Brooklyn

This event is 21 and over Nitro. Astro. Boogeyman from space. My name is Sonny Smith. This is a Sonny & The Sunsets recording. We started a label. Rocks In Your Head Records, named after a record shop I used to spend time in, in Soho New York two decades ago that uplifted me in a way only old record stores can. The first release is this record, Hairdressers From Heaven. We are going to put out some records that would end up in that old store. Some weird bands, some fictional bands, some real bands. San Francisco has taken hits. Clubs have closed. Artists have left. There are good bands in this city. There are great artists making bizarre shit. There are underground HAPPENINGS. There are SECRET shows. There are artists in the streets duking it out with Nazis. Shit is going down. The corporate bulldozers ran through the city and they are still driving around demolishing the place. These tanks are called Death and they bring a foul stench. Humbly, this label is our version of throwing nails at the tank tires.

Los Lonely Boys With Guest The Gary Douglas Band - The Space at Westbury
April 20, 2019 - Westbury

AUSTIN, Texas—"We decided to call this album Revelation because we want to make music that reveals something to people about their lives and their world," says Jojo Garza. He's talking about the new release by Los Lonely Boys, the close-knit Texas trio that the bassist/vocalist shares with his brothers Henry (vocals, guitar) and Ringo (drums, vocals). "As musicians and artists, we're here to connect with people, and to share our view of things." Revelation — to be released on the band's own LonelyTone imprint Jan. 21, 2014, in association with the respected Austin-based indie Playing in Traffic — is a landmark release for the siblings. While maintaining the infectiously melodic mix of bluesy rock 'n' roll and rootsy brown-eyed soul that's long endeared Los Lonely Boys to its fiercely loyal fan base, Revelation adds an expansive range of new sonic elements, e.g. the conjunto touches of "Blame It On Love," the reggae groove of "Give A Little More," the rustic acoustic textures of "It's Just My Heart Talkin' and the baroque pop elements of "There's Always Tomorrow." "We're always trying to broaden our horizons and advance musically, and that's something that we were very conscious o... (read more)

Refiguring Binaries - Pioneer Works
April 21, 2019 - Brooklyn

In recent years, the contours of a new contemporary art movement have begun to emerge, forged in reaction to the ideologies of Silicon Valley, the platforming and globalization of culture, and technologies of power like artificial intelligence, photorealistic computer-generated images, and virtual and augmented reality. These "Simulists" simultaneously embrace and subvert technology as their means of interrogation–expressing humanist, nonbinary, and decolonized futures. Curated by Kelani Nichole and featuring works by Morehshin Allahyari, LaTurbo Avedon, Meriem Bennani, Snow Yunxue Fu, Claudia Hart, Faith Holland, Lorna Mills, Eva Papamargariti, Tabita Rezaire, and Lu Yang, the exhibition explores identity, the body, and the politics of technology. Virtual space is inhabited with queer bodies and cultural identity is reclaimed through subversive uses of technology. The boundaries of technology and the body are blurred, as are the lines between author, image, and copy. Possible futures emerge as the layers of simulation that mediate contemporary culture are revealed.

Alejandro Piñeiro Bello, Jose Capaz, And Fabelohung - Pioneer Works
April 21, 2019 - Brooklyn

Tribuna Antimperialista was the site of a long-term propaganda battle in the late 1990s between the Cuban government and the United States Interests Section, Havana (USINT), which was situated in a building across the street from the square. In 2006, the United States installed a five-feet high ticker tape display across the top floor of the building which broadcast messages and quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. and other cultural figures such as the comedian George Burns, who once remarked: "How sad that all the people who would know how to run this country are driving taxis or cutting hair." The Cuban government responded by erecting the monument Monte de las Banderas, or Wall of Flags, out of one hundred fifty flags to commemorate "victims of US aggression" and to partially block the ticker. At Pioneer Works, En El Monte evokes this square with an installation of flagpoles, onto which virtual reality headsets are attached.
