Housed on the third floor of the World of Disney store, the recently re-opened Art of Disney Gallery (711 Fifth Ave. at 55th St., 212-702-0720) features high-quality art portraying everybody’s favorite mouse and other beloved Disney characters. (Some examples of the types of art available include animation art and lithographs for collectors.) The gallery also houses tapestries, original art paintings, posters, and petite prints. A decorative line of Disney characters and classic movie scenes on chargers and vases by artist Elisabeth Gomes, and an assortment of etched glass trays and paperweights are featured by glass artist Robert Guenther. The gallery will highlight a grouping of Disney Big Figs, characters up to 18” tall captured from film moments or depicting scenes from everyday life. New original art will be introduced to the gallery as it becomes available and space allows. The gallery originally existed in the Disney Store that occupied the space until 2004 but was closed when the revamped World of Disney store was opened. The gallery is re-opening about two years later due to popular demand and will introduce a redone space designed to suit the fun environment of the art.
