Love All Alices
Love All Alices is a live play that tells the story of legendary New York City acting teacher Alice Spivak, who taught for more than 60 years and died in 2020 at the age of 85. She was a born storyteller. Herbert Bergof said of her, “Alice goes to the bathroom and comes back with a story.” With a native New Yorker’s frankness, and a lifelong performer’s ear for the dramatic, she would regale anyone in her presence with wild tales from her life. A protegé of Uta Hagen, Spivak’s thousands of students include Carrie Fisher and Spike Lee (both of whom wrote about her in their memoirs), Tyra Banks (who featured her on America’s Next Top Model) and Courteney Cox (whom she famously tried to talk out of taking the pilot for Friends). She was the name passed between actors, the secret weapon behind countless great performances on both stage and screen. Spivak was a creative philosopher who acted in opposition to her time. While her contributions were made mainly behind the scenes, Spivak’s stories, theories, and radical imagination offer a new way to look at craft and performance. Love All Alices is composed of the greatest stories of Spivak’s life performed by actors who knew her. Over two nights the play will be shot and incorporated into an upcoming documentary film of the same name.
