So many of America’s biggest names in the world of comedy got their start in NYC, and there’s a perpetual fountain of new talent showing up in the comedy clubs of the city every single day. If you want to know where to find them, these five standup spots below are your best bet. Who knows, you might even run across a famous face or two while you’re visiting.

Best of NYC Comedy Clubs: Gotham Comedy Club (Chelsea)

Gotham Comedy Club

Gotham Comedy Club had its 20-year anniversary this year, having been originally opened by Chris Mazzilli and Michael Reisman in 1996. Over the past two decades, almost every major comic has made his or her way through Gotham’s doors, including Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook, and Roseanne Barr. And don’t think that the best has already happened, because Gotham continues to bring in some of NYC’s most up and coming comedians on a regular basis. 208 W. 23rd St., 212-367-9000,

Best of NYC Comedy Clubs: Comedy Cellar (Greenwich Village)

Comedy Cellar

This comedic hotspot fills up fast, so prepare yourself, it might get a little crowded. But you know what? The claustrophobia is totally worth it to see names like Chris Rock, Louis CK and Aziz Ansari stopping by on any given night. In addition to their always spectacular lineups, Comedy Cellar’s small space (and likely, two drink minimum) adds to an overall sense of community. Think about it this way, where else in the world can you share a tiny, 100-person room with the likes of Trevor Noah and Judd Apatow? Exactly. 117 MacDougal St., 212-254-3480,

Best of NYC Comedy Clubs: Broadway Comedy Club (Hell’s Kitchen)

Broadway Comedy Club

Broadway Comedy Club opened in 2003, and this bi-level entertainment complex has been making visitors and locals alike laugh ever since. With three different showrooms, it’s no surprise that this comedy club attracts some of the world’s biggest comedy fans, including Beyonce, Jimmy Fallon, and Harry Connick Jr. Hey, if it’s good enough for them, you better believe it’s good enough for anybody… right? Also, be sure to check out the specially produced shows. 318 W. 53rd St., 212-757-2323,

Best of NYC Comedy Clubs: Stand Up NY (Upper West Side)

Stand Up NY

Open for over three decades, Stand Up NY is one of New York City’s premiere comedy clubs. An elegant interior makes for the ideal setting as you spend the night busting a gut with some of the city’s biggest and brightest comedic talents. Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, and Tracy Morgan have all taken to the stage at Stand Up NY, among many other beloved comics. And don’t worry if you arrive with an appetite, because Stand Up NY has an appetizer, entrée, and dessert menu to help you get your fill and enjoy the show. 236 W. 78th St., 212-595-0850,

Best of NYC Comedy Clubs: The Stand Restaurant & Comedy Club (Gramercy)

Show up early at The Stand to enjoy some topnotch entrees and appetizers prepared by critically acclaimed chef, Seth Levine, in the upstairs restaurant before heading downstairs to catch the night’s act. Shows occur seven nights a week, and big names such as Judah Friedlander taking the stage regularly. Who could ask for more from a comedy club? Oh, and did we mention that you’ll sometimes find the comics lounging in the upstairs restaurant after the show? 239 Third Ave., 212-677-2600,
