DOWN THE URINAL HOLE AND AROUND THE CORNER - Dixon Place
November 17, 2017 - New York City
A Dixon Place premiere you won't tell your parents about when you dress up and sneak out to see it late at night. Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's Masque of the Red Death, this ensemble-created piece explores power, privilege, and unrequited love. We follow the adventures of MAN as he stumbles upon an invitation he shouldn't open, goes to a party where he doesn't belong, and experiences a night he never should have experienced. Using subculture interactions to reflect societal norms, this show reveals and destabilizes the status quo like a funhouse mirror. Drawing from the worlds of vaudeville, clowning, drag, and cult horror, we aim to entertain, unsettle, disgust, and delight.

China Crisis - Iridium
Through December 07, 2017 - NY
China Crisis are an English pop/rock band. They formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside with a core of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. Their output was pop music similar in style to that of New Wave but with strong similarities to the post-punk movement of the early 1980s, namely inclusion of a broader range of musical influences and occasional flirtation with political commentary. Throughout their career, China Crisis has seen moderate success in the United Kingdom with ten hit singles between August 1982 and January 1987 and six albums, as well as commercial success in Western Europe, Australia and the Americas. Sharing an affection for Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, David Bowie, and Brian Eno, Daly and Lundon played with various Knowsley post-punk groups. Daly then spent time tinkering with synthesizers and a drum machine. Along with Lundon, Daly began writing songs. The pair eventually asked drummer and percussionist Dave Reilly to join them, and in 1982 they released their debut single "African and White" as China Crisis on the independent record label, Inevitable. In June 1982, they supported the former Television guitarist, Tom Verlaine... (read more)

Stanley Jordan - Iridium
Through December 17, 2017 - NY
In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. Key to Jordan's fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar's fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley's fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so h... (read more)

Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Iridium
Through January 14, 2018 - NY
Ever since they first formed some 25 years ago, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies made it their mission to veer from genre to genre across the musical map, choosing to follow their own muse regardless of feedback from fans and critics alike. Truth be told, individuality and defiance have always been part of the band's DNA, and have, in turn, reinforced their rebellious reputation. Granted, though that image is well deserved, the ability to bend the boundaries has been simultaneously tempered and informed by an adherence to an older, now vanished tradition, grounded in Tin Pan Alley, Swing music and the great American songbook. According to the band's longtime leader, singer/songwriter Steve Perry, the band's mantra has remained the same – "the obstacle is the path", that is, to pursue unexpected and difficult avenues that challenge both themselves as artists and modern sensibilities while at the same time adhering to standards and erstwhile traditions of American popular song. To that point, the band's new opus titled Please Return the Evening: The Cherry Poppin' Daddies Salute the Music of the Rat Pack – was designed as a challenge to their craftsmanship in the recording studio, at... Kasim Sulton's Utopia - Iridium
Through February 03, 2018 - NY
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kasim Sulton will be honoring his longtime association with the ground breaking progressive rock band Utopia and their legacy by performing a show consisting entirely of Utopia music with a full band. The set list will be comprised of songs hand-picked by Sulton, spanning the 10 albums he appears on, including deep cuts as well as many more familiar songs. "My career began with Utopia, says Sulton. "I can't think of a better way to honor my work with Todd, Roger, and Willie than to do a handful of shows that celebrate the special and unique music we created together." Utopia was initially formed in 1973 with somewhat of a fluid membership, and by mid-1976 settled into a stable quartet of Todd Rundgren (guitar, vocals), Kasim Sulton (bass, vocals), Roger Powell (keyboards, vocals), and Willie Wilcox (drums, vocals). All four band members wrote, sang, produced, and even engineered material for the band. Sulton wrote and sang lead on Utopia's biggest hit, "Set Me Free," from their best-selling album Adventures in Utopia (1980), which peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Top 40 charts in the U.S. BAND LINE-UP: Kasim Sulton – Bass a...
