Twiddle - The Capitol Theatre
November 24, 2017 - Port Chester

With 12 years of relentless touring behind them, Vermont-based rock band Twiddle has built an impressive resume spanning Red Rocks to Bonnaroo, and multiple sellouts of historic rock venues including Port Chester, NY's Capitol Theatre, and Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club. And with the second half of the band's third studio album, PLUMP, on the horizon, the band's career continues to catapult forward. Buoyed by the generous support of 359 Kickstarter donors, the 27-song album does more than showcase the group's beautiful music, but also tells an important story, comprised in PLUMP Chapters 1 & 2. Recorded during a two-year span with legendary producer Ron St. Germain, PLUMP serves as a reflection of four brothers' triumphs and struggles, both individual and as a whole. On Chapter 1, songs like "Lost in the Cold" and "Every Soul" detail what it's like to hit rock bottom and how to rise back up. "So many fans have shared how these songs carried them through very difficult times, and that alone makes this all worth it," said Brook Jordan, Twiddle's percussionist and vocalist.

Slaughter Beach, Dog - Mercury Lounge
November 24, 2017 - New York

Few bands can say they were born out of necessity, but Slaughter Beach, Dog can. In 2015, Jake Ewald, in the midst of trying to write songs for his other band Modern Baseball (which has since gone on hiatus), hit a patch of writer's block. To get himself back in action, Ewald decided to move the focus off of himself, stitching together a loose narrative surrounding a motley cast of characters. Before he knew it, he'd written an entire album, and Slaughter Beach, Dog was no longer an exercise, it was a full-fledged band. "When I gave myself the specific goal to write these kinds of songs and figure out how to do it, it just broke me open in a way I really needed." What came pouring out of Ewald was Welcome,a 10-track debut that showed his ability to create a world of his own making, all the while blurring the line between fiction and reality. At times, he'd be singing about people and situations he invented, but the songs were still personal, often informed by experiences deep in his past, excavated for the purpose of expanding his songwriting vocabulary. This approach is even more evident on the new, four-song Slaughter Beach, Dog EP, Motorcycle. jpg. Recalling the likes of John... (read more)

Children of Bodom - PlayStation Theater
November 24, 2017 - New York

Carach Angren, Lost Society, Uncured In the last eight or so years, Children Of Bodom that darted to international fame with their debut, 1997's "Something Wild", has gone from being "this amazing band from Finland" to a household name in the metalscene. And that, of course, is obvious given the intensity, sheer quality of their material and the flawless execution. Formed in 1993 and hailing from the city of Espoo, Finland, this young Finnish group took their name from one of the biggest murder mysteries in the history of their home town and Finnish crime: the murders at the Lake Bodom. After starting out as a thrash-metal combo, the founding members Alexi Laiho (guitars and vocals), Jaska Raatikainen (drums), Henkka Sepp'l' (bass) and Alexander Kuoppala (guitars) soon found elements of classic heavy metal creeping into their music. After taking in keyboardist Janne Wirman to complete their line-up, they honed their combination of old school black metal, classic heavy, and death metal vocals into the sharpest instrument of its kind and headed out to a studio record a demo tape.

TAUKsgiving - Bowery Ballroom
November 24, 2017 - New York

On their third studio album Sir Nebula, TAUK tap into their singular chemistry to elevate and expand their all-instrumental blend of funk, hip-hop, progressive rock, and jazz. Revealing both their refined musicality and unbridled creativity, the Oyster Bay, New York-bred rock-fusion four-piece (guitarist Matt Jalbert, bassist Charlie Dolan, keyboardist/organist Alric "A.C." Carter, and drummer Isaac Teel) push into new sonic terrain and build entire worlds within each richly textured soundscape. From the hazy atmospherics of "Time's Up" and soaring riffs of "Program Select" to the urgent rhythms of "Shenanigans" and sprawling melodies of "Where You Are," Sir Nebula finds TAUK introducing a cosmically inspired element to their music. "The album ended up taking on a more ambient kind of vibe than anything we've done before—there's a spaciness in the songs that lets you get lost in the sound," says Dolan. And while the album is endlessly hypnotic, TAUK also deliver the dynamic tension-and-release jams that have helped earn them a devoted following while drawing critical acclaim (the Washington Post, for one, praised TAUK for "creating a hard-charging, often melodic fusion that—than... Based out of Baltimore, MD, this animated quartet has been scorching up the country with their explosive performances and danceable peaks... and they're loving every minute of it. "Flamingosis (the name comes from a freestyle Frisbee move that his father invented) is an electronic music producer, beatboxer and entertainer. Gathering influences from other beat makers, such as Flying Lotus, J Dilla and Madlib, Aaron is able to take these sources of inspiration in order to come up with his own unique style."

The Front Bottoms - Terminal 5
November 25, 2017 - New York

Whether they're just strutting their stuff or referencing a sexual position, the Front Bottoms have delivered a powerful new album with Back On Top. Their first for Fueled By Ramen is both full of departures and a continuation of the work they've been building on for years. Brian Sella (vocals, guitar) and Mat Uychich (drums) have put together a vibrant array of killer new songs with their band mates Tom "Two Slaps" Warren (bass) and Ciaran "C-Dog" O'Donnell (guitar, horns, keyboards). The growth and confidence shows in the work of this unit of four. While there is plenty that is familiar from Mat's powerhouse drumming to Brian's acoustic guitar and a healthy dose of horns, there is also plenty that is new, including bigger rock sounds ("Motorcycle," "West Virginia," "The Plan (Fuck Jobs)") and surprisingly melodic vocal parts. ("Cough It Out," "HELP"). There's even a guest turn from Jersey rapper GDP who takes their darker side to even darker places in the "Historic Cemetery." Songs flow seamlessly into each other and the album just gets stronger as it moves along. Under the production ears of Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, The Strokes, Morrissey, White Stripes) the mixes are especiall... (read more)

Ducktails - Music Hall of Williamsburg
November 25, 2017 - Brooklyn

Ducktails is the recording name of New Jersey–based musician Matthew Mondanile, who took it on in 2008 as a student at Hampshire College, releasing a steady stream of acclaimed records on far-flung independent labels. The project trafficks in the spaced-out pop songs one might pick up in out-of-the-way thrift stores or deep in bins of 1970s private-press records—it's a casually sophisticated, genre-eluding pop ambiance. Mondanile shifts among numerous modes when performing, appearing alone with arrays of instruments or with a full-fledged band and guest singers. Domino released the fifth LP, "St. Catherine" in 2015. Mondanile tours abroad extensively, and has performed at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the MoMA. He will be touring in support of his new album "Jersey Devil" on guitar & electronics for this upcoming performance.

Don't Knock the Rock. 1956. Directed by Fred F. Sears - MoMA : Museum of Modern Art
November 25, 2017 - New York

Don't Knock the Rock. 1956. USA. Directed by Fred F. Sears. With Alan Dale, Bill Haley & His Comets, Little Richard, The Treniers. 16mm. 84 min. Rock films were popular fare on the downtown club scene, and the first genre screened in the church's basement club. The notion that rock music fueled dangerous socializing still had enough credibility on the post-punk scene to make the film's premise amusing to Club 57 audiences; Don't Knock the Rock screened at the club as part of an occasional Rock 'n' Roll Memorial series. Set in a town that bans rock 'n' roll to protect its horny teenaged population, this film—much like Rock Around the Clock, released earlier the same year—is at its best as an interracial musical revue. Proving the appeal of this hokey plot to mainstream audiences at the time, it was adapted for the hit Footloose in 1984.

Pierce Fulton & NVDES Present: Better Places Tour - Mercury Lounge
November 26, 2017 - New York

There's not much to do in Vermont...Though the combination of cold weather and small isolated towns do force an extremely bored kid to get creative. Now it's 1998, picture Pierce at 6 years old, sitting on a tiny guitar amp with similarly tiny guitar in hand, begging his parents and family friends for song requests. Long before his time as a DJ, he was pleasing crowds (though much older) with covers of all 60s-70s era classic rock, having no idea what kind of impact this would have later. Fast forward a few years and those song requests turned suggestions of various genres and eventually different instruments. A quick ear helped him in first picking up the guitar as a child and later moving onto drums, piano, trombone and more. Pierce has always had this fascination for taking a concept from one instrument or genre and applying it to something new, an activity that would later define the core of his music. Now with 15 years of classic rock, reggae, blues and even a bit of metal and classical music under his belt, you can imagine how strange Pierce's first interaction with electronic music was. Somehow this small high school in Vermont was blessed with an incredible music... (read more)
