Steady Holiday - Mercury Lounge
November 10, 2018 - New York

Steady Holiday is an appropriate name for an artist whose music feels like the soundtrack to your fondest memory. Or your deepest heartbreak. Or the dream sequence from a David Lynch film. There's a nostalgia present in Dre Babinski's songwriting that leaves you longing for the familiarity of a bygone era - just not one you can necessarily pin down. After years growing up playing in bands around Los Angeles, Dre recently began writing and recording for herself - on her own, in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Establishing a sound defined by her featherlight voice floating above sweeping strings, her 2016 debut Under the Influence led to opening for artists like Mitski, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Whereas the first record took us on a trip through the deeply personal, Dre's sophomore album Nobody's Watching zooms way out. What began as a concept record about two archetypal crooks developed into an exploration of universal themes like greed, fear and self-interest; the ugly and troubling edges of human nature. It's a good time for that. "I've been just as affected by our current politics as anyone, but it only takes one step bac... (read more)

Ceg & Nolafunk Present Marcus King Band - Irving Plaza
November 16, 2018 - New york

THE MARCUS KING BAND Young songwriter Marcus King's debut album, Soul Insight, out now via Evil Teen Records, displays his stunning command of rock, blues, psychedelia, funk, soul and improvisation — all with a distinctly Southern musical accent. It also brings the 19-year-old a step closer to his musical destiny. "I guess I knew I was born to play guitar when I was seven," King says. "That's when I got my first electric guitar, and while all the other kids were outside playing, I'd be inside on that guitar. When I got in trouble in school, my daddy said I could choose between a spanking and getting my guitar taken away for a week. I took the spanking." Soul Insight is the explosive result of that dedication, magnified by another dozen years and more than a thousand nights playing in clubs — initially alongside his father, bluesman Marvin King — since the age of 11, just two years before Marcus formed his own group and stepped into the role of leader.

Rob Roth, Blondie's creative director, moderates. Stein will sign copies of his book following the discussion. During Blondie's reign at the epicenter of punk's golden age, Chris Stein kept an unrivaled photographic record of the downtown New York City scene. Point of View is a personal and visually arresting collection of Stein's photographs which captures an important, but fading chapter in Manhattan's history. Focusing mainly on a single decade in Stein's own world, the images presented take us from self-portraits in his run down East Village apartment to candid photographs of pop cultural icons of the time, like Harry, and evocative shots of New York City streetscapes in all their most longed for romance and dereliction.
